Review of Terms of Service
Imagine a world that is controlled entirely by technology. The food we eat, the colors of the clothes we wear, and even how we conduct ourselves in the society. Terms of Service: Subject to Change Without Notice by Craig. W. Stanfill is a fantasy that evolves around a world dominated by artificial intelligence. Kim works at an artificial intelligence company training basic AIs without logic. However, she resents her job and living a life controlled by the AIs. Even though she has friends, she feels somewhat lonely. In this AI-controlled era, when a child is born, they are given away to a mentor at a certain young age. Their parents, birth givers as stated in the book, would occasionally visit them. However, Kim never knew her birth giver. They never visited her. What could be the reason?
Kim wants freedom more than anything else. She feels the AIs have dominated in such a way that the society has lost its freedom and rights. In this fight for freedom she comes across information that changes her life and puts it in danger. What information could this be?
I loved how enlightening this book was. Like most people, I always thought having robots that can do my chores for me would make my life easier. Being forced to eat or wear what I do not want is a clear loss of freedom, and losing freedom to machines is not something that I would enjoy. I loved how the author portrayed Kim's character to be so human one could actually relate to her. Her yearning for freedom and the things she went through were all so real. She went on blind dates trying to fill a void in her life instead of finding the source of her emptiness and dealing with the problem from the source, but as expected, she failed to do so. She still felt empty even after the blind dates. Some people go through this in real life.
I loved how Stanfill was good at developing his characters. Even though Kim was the protagonist, all the other minor characters around her were developed so well you would not forget them. I also loved how the author left everything so mysterious that the book was full of suspense. It kept me hooked to the book.
I loved everything about this book from the storyline to the writing style. The vocabulary was flowing. There were no grammatical or typographical errors that I could find. I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend this book to readers who like science fiction. It is a great read and it will not disappoint. It is suitable for a mature audience and readers of all religious beliefs can read it.
