In a world of magic, mind, and strength, there is a kingdom hanging in the balance. There are powers to wield, choices to make, and battles to fight. Each must be chosen carefully.

We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz tells the story of the great kingdom of Voulhire. It is centered on the violent usurpation of Lord Orlin by Melodrath, a powerful mage. Of the arrival of Galen, a young immigrant who has a sudden rise in station and must learn to navigate this new world. Of King Wilhelm who makes dangerous decisions while trying to keep his nation under control.
It is a story of victory, defeat, conspiracy, deception, betrayal, and friendship.

I found King Wilhelm to be fascinating. He was a king who loved his people, and in his bid to prove his love, he made many deceptions. Galen, on the other hand, was new to Voulhire and was growing accustomed to life there. Though they appear to be opposites when considering their depth of knowledge of Voulhire, they still similarly find themselves surrounded by doubt. Wilhelm is still determining if good will ever trump evil and Galen is not sure about his new friends.

I liked the Aldaman family. Lord Eldrus and his family sought to do excellently the assignment they were given. I enjoyed the family dynamics, including the siblings' occasional banter.

Melodrath was a worthy villain who kept me on my toes even while he was in prison. Also, I found myself wondering about how the Riva Rohavi, Voulhire's enemy kept wreaking havoc on them instead of channeling resources into building a nation of their own because they were so consumed by hate.

The story was narrated in a way akin to legends told around a campfire. It was almost as if the author held my hand, guiding me through the whole country of Voulhire, pointing at every mountain, river, sea, and building while sharing its history. It possesses such intricate world-building.

What I did not like was how I was overwhelmed by numerous characters. Though, later on, I understood that it was needed to execute the plot. I also found the map and list of character names helpful.

This book is riveting and highly entertaining. It is also flawlessly edited. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to people looking for a book about a world full of adventure.
