Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first book of a series comprising of nine books. Voulhire is a large and prosperous kingdom admired by many. It falls under King Wilhelm's rule. It is made up of numerous cities all at various rates of economic progress. All hell breaks loose after Meldorath resigns as a general and heads for Hillport to challenge Lord Orlin for his position with groundbreaking accusations. Meldorath's methodology of ruling was one the people of Hillport feared. He was a mage who abused his powers. King Wilhelm tried to have Meldorath arrested. However, it is uncertain whether Meldorath is dead or still alive. The uncertainty instills fear and restlessness into the people of Hillport. King Wilhelm assigns former Judge Eldus as the new Lord of Hillport. With the Riva Rohavi, a rebellious group, continuing its rebellion against Voulhire, the uncertainty of a feared mage's death, and the rising of a kingdom Voulhire once conquered hanging over the great Kingdom's head, will the king succeed into keeping the reputation of his kingdom? Will the great and mighty Voulhire fall?
In the Lands of the Princes, Galen Bray is fleeing from soldiers. He boards a ship that leaves him in Magnum Caelum. His uncle whom he never met has died and left him his fodge as an inheritance. He goes on a journey of discovery with Rowan, the man his uncle employed to find him, and Demetrius. Are Galen's companions who they seem to be, or is there more to them than meets the eye? Is Galen ready for what Voulhire has in store for him?
I was completely mind-blown by Matthew Tysz's imagination. He imagined a whole world and created it on paper with so much passion that it felt real. I loved how he described his plots to the last detail. I could see pictures in my head it felt like a movie. I loved the cover page of the book. It shows walls of a great kingdom falling, but it does not necessarily indicate whether the wall will completely collapse or not. It symbolizes Voulhire and its troubles. I liked how the author left out some important details from this edition which I think are going to make the next edition of the series.
At the beginning of the book, the author listed the characters in the book with a brief description of their roles. This was smart because the book contains a lot of characters, and it can be very easy for readers to get lost between characters. However, Tysz is so good at descriptions that I did not necessarily have to keep referring to the list. The author used open dialog and I feel this prevented the whole read from being somewhat stiff.
Saying I liked everything about this book would be an understatement. From the title and the fact that the book is based completely on a world the author fantasized about and weaved in his head, I did not think this book would be much at all. I guess I had missed the whole point of it falling under the fantasy genre. The author's vocabulary showed how skilled he is. The lack of errors, grammatical or typographical, proved how time was put into its exceptional editing. The ability to maintain suspense and the general flow of the book even was unquestionable. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
I recommend We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies to lovers of science fiction and fantasy. Being a fan of the genre myself, I strongly feel this book dominated in it. It has scenes with graphic descriptions of violence and sensitive readers should take note. Because of the violence, I recommend it to a mature audience.
