Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a fantasy novel that begins as mayhem breaks out in Castle Hillport in the form of an attack. The attackers use black magic, and as a result, there are many casualties. This is a foreshadowing of what is to come and sets the pace for the reader regarding what the rest of the story will be like. Soon after, the reader meets the main character, Galen Bray, who is a charismatic young man on his way to visit his uncle. He is traveling from the Land of the Princes to Mangum Caelum after his uncle sent for him.
Unfortunately, his uncle suddenly passes away before they get a chance to meet, and Galen inherits the family business. He meets his uncle’s executor, Rowan, who is another major character in the book. Rowan and Galen become good friends over time as Rowan fills him in on the ins and outs of the forge he just inherited, as well as other details of his uncle’s life.
At the same time, in a city near Magnum Caelum, a new leader comes into power. Eldus Alderman, the new leader, is determined to correct the mistakes of previous leaders. This is met with pushback, as several influential people are currently benefiting from this broken system. Fighting against the system can prove dangerous for him and his family. Will he be able to survive? Read the book to find out.
The book is well written and uses easy-to-understand language. This made the different plot lines easy to follow for the reader. The storylines were a roller-coaster to read through, as the book contains several complicated scenes. This, however, did not deter the story but added an interesting aspect to it. I liked how the author goes into detail about the complicated scenes in the book. It is truly a testament to their writing ability, as they can piece together such a story and have it flow smoothly from beginning to end. The ending was also satisfactory, and I found it tied up the loose ends neatly while setting the reader up for a potential sequel.
There are a lot of darker themes and lighter themes in the book. Some of the darker themes in the book include murder, death, corruption, sacrifice, betrayal, and black magic. This is to provide a trigger warning to those who might wish to pick up this book. Some of the lighter themes in the book include friendship, love, family, and loyalty. I disliked nothing about this book, and I would pick up the rest of the books in the series.
I genuinely enjoyed reading this book, so I give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. I also did not find any grammatical errors, and the book seems to be exceptionally well-edited. I would recommend it to anyone looking to explore a new fantastical world with exciting characters and storylines. The book can stand on its own as a standalone novel.
