Review of We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko
We are voulhire: the fire of virko is the second book of the voulhire series written by Matthew Tysz. If you've not read the first book, a New Arrival under Great Skies, I will suggest you do, to be able to connect the events in this second book. Matthew did not continue this book where it ended in book one, but still once again showed his wonderful skill in writing. Galen and his friends are off to the land of virko to seek iron for their town but are in shock at what they discover on their little journey.
The book focuses on the land of virko. An industrial city that was ruled by Venden Hrelek, Who died from an unidentified and partially untreatable illness. He was known to be a benevolent and gracious ruler, and when Galen and his companions arrived in his city to acquire iron, he readily granted their request. Asking for one last request, Galen and his friends were to purify his residence, particularly the subterranean chambers, where he suspects a malevolent entity is lurking and tormenting the inhabitants of Virko. Additionally, he is concerned that his son, Folcro may be linked to the demon and slowly succumbing to its sinister influence.
Just like the first book, this book is wonderfully written and I commend the author for that. Some chapters of this book are in first person point of view and others in third person point of view. This gave a clear picture of the plots and made the reading easygoing. I loved when Galen and his friend's part of the story came up. It was funny, hearty, and easygoing. Although Matthew used some words that will make readers turn to their dictionary to understand what the sentence is talking about.
I anticipated discovering clues regarding the location of Marshus and the Riva Rohavi, but they seemed to exist only as additional characters in the first book. Beth, who was mentioned in the initial book as being from another world and beginning to work with Meldorath was not featured in the second, leaving me with further unanswered inquiries. The book is generally centered around men, whereas events with women were not elaborated on.
I rate this book 5 out of 5. Although some characters mentioned in book one were not brought up again, the book is still enjoyable. The book is well-edited with each plot well-described. Profanity was used in the book and some readers might find it slightly offensive. Readers who love fantasy, adventure, and power will love this book.
