The idea that one day this world could be ruled by artificial intelligence is quite scary. The plot of this book, Terms of Service, written by Craig W. Stanfill, is dependent on this idea. Kim lives in a world where AI dictates everything about people. There is no freedom, as everyone is under surveillance. The AI decides what people eat, the clothes they wear, their sexual lives, the jobs they work, and also their social status. There is a reward for compliance and penance for rebellion, as points are awarded to law-abiding citizens and deducted from those who do otherwise, as the AI instructs. Your points would decide the kind of luxury available to you; hence, it separates the rich from the poor.

Kim is hardworking and adheres to all the rules set by the AI. She doesn't complain or show any trace of rebellion, as she believes that one day all her compliance will be worth it. One day, Kim would accidentally cross an off-limits zone; she expected some sort of warning signal to be triggered but, to her surprise, it was not. This would set her on an adventure to explore the outlands and discover a shocking truth.

I've always had a thing for books with dystopian themes, so I was quite eager to read this book, and it exceeded my expectations. The details in this book were so subtle, and to think that the author was able to sell his ideas and imagination on AI to the average reader was just perfect. I know very little about artificial intelligence, but that didn't hinder my comprehension of this book. The best thing I liked about this book was the unisexual feature. Even though the AI restricted the pronouns used by the characters, the reader could still tell a feminine character from a masculine character. This story was good, and I'm looking forward to reading the sequel.

I found only one thing to dislike about this book. I found some of the phrases used by the characters quite confusing. I understand that this book is set in a dystopian era, something we know little about. The author was trying to be authentic about the location and its people, but in that process, he created a little confusion with his choice of diction.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. It would be unfair to rate this book any lower than this, as I only found one minor thing I didn't like about the book. There are no errors in this book; it was perfectly edited. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy books set in a dystopian era or a post-apocalyptic world.
