Review of Terms of Service
Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill is a science fiction book that tries to reveal the state of America if everything, especially law enactment and law enforcement becomes a job for Artificial Intelligence. This book also projects a monopolized society where various services such as providing food, transportation, housing, etc are rendered by a single company. This society, even though considered to be perfect also includes a set of people who thinks control and operations should be as it was, without the AIs handling them. These set of people are seen to go against society’s mantra, and as a result, always incur punishments for their actions and rebellion.
In this book, the author projects a selfless community, where selfism is considered a high-order offense and rebellion against the UCE (Unity, Community, and Equality) mantra. Stanfill centers the book around a young, and talented AI trainer who is very curious and at the same time tries to abide by every single term of service she’s aware of. She tries to work her way up the ranks by staying diligent at her job and keeping her nose clean, but eventually, there was an unexpected turn of events that led her to incur so many violations. But to her greatest surprise, while she waited for an official demotion, she got the promotion she’s always wanted (from trainer to creator), and this promotion changed her standard of living and her entire belief system. As time goes on, she finds out some hard truths about her past which makes her question the authenticity of her present reality, and these newfound truths land her in even bigger trouble with the Hierarchy.
I like the author’s vast imagination and how he’s able to project such a society. The storyline and the setting are both great and awesome. For a work like this, there’s no doubt the author put in a lot of work to break into such a creative space, and I like that effort. I also like the monopolistic setting of the society projected in this book. It helped the author create a society where accountability is prioritized, and law and order are upheld. Lastly, and most amusing for me, is how the author also changed the days of the week from the original ones. It kind of sent the message of an entirely new and different society.
There is nothing I did not like about this book. It was well-written and well-detailed. The author employed every bit of creativity within his reach to create this. I appreciate that.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. This is because it is a captivating work of fiction, and the author seemed to have employed his vast knowledge of the subject matter to make this book as fascinating as possible. The book was also exceptionally well-edited. I did not notice any spelling errors while reading this book. That’s great work on the editor’s part.
I recommend this book to readers who are interested in science fiction, particularly, Artificial Intelligence (AI). I also recommend it to readers who would love to expand their scope on the possibilities of technology and artificial intelligence. If you also have an interest in fiction that tends to project the future, then you would love this.
