Review of Terms of Service
Craig W. Stanfill's Terms of Service is a dystopian novel set in a futuristic world where artificial intelligence (AI) dominates humans in politics, society, and the economy. The story revolves around Kim, the main character, who works as an AI trainer. Her job involves training AIs to detect individuals who conduct illegal behaviors. However, her curiosity leads her to a situation from which she cannot escape, and she meets an AI named Kimberly, who shares a deep connection with her. With Kimberly's help, Kim uncovers her past and rebels against the society she once served.
The book delves into complex AI jargon and portrays a society where every aspect of citizens' lives is controlled, from their movements to their conversations. The invasion of privacy for control is staggering, and any intimate act is deemed illegal and punishable with years of imprisonment. The state raises children, and people's personalities are predetermined through implanted false memories. The novel explores themes of power, freedom, excitement, and love, highlighting the consequences of a society that relies too heavily on AI.
The book had a unique and interesting plot that kept me engaged and entertained. The tale was surprising, and the author did a great job creating a dystopian world. It was simple to picture oneself in the novel due to the well-done character, labor, and equipment descriptions. The theme of the book was timely in light of recent technological advancements and offered an interesting viewpoint on how humans and artificial intelligence may cohabit. The author's enthusiasm for technology was clear from the book's smooth pace and technical information, which helped me fully immerse myself in the scenes.
I honestly found nothing to dislike about the book and found it to be very interesting and unique. I appreciated the writer's ability to unfold every mystery in the book, which kept me on the edge of my seat with suspense. Even though there were a few instances of complicated language usage, I really enjoyed reading it and found Kim's life and decisions to be fascinating. I can't wait to read the follow-up book and see what happens to her. Overall, I had a very positive experience reading the book.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I found no errors in this book; it is exceptionally well edited. I highly recommend it to young adults who are interested in exploring the coexistence of artificial intelligence and humanity. I also recommend it to readers who enjoy stories with strong female characters and those who enjoy science fiction.
