Defiance, by Adrienne Monson
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This is the second book of the Blood Inheritance trilogy e it is with great shame that I admit that I have not read the first book. And why? Because when I saw it on Nerdy Girl Book Reviews I couldn't resist and I didn't even check on Goodreads if it was a stand-alone book or a series. Only when I started reading it I realized that a lot had already happened.
One thing I realized was that there were some similarities with the Twilight series. But there were very little, so it did not bother me.
Samantha, our young protagonist, is in a bit of a mess. From dramas that you can almost call familiar, to teenage problems, to vampires with hundreds (some thousands) of years, to immortals and...different humans.
I don't think that I can say that there was a character that I didn't like, I think all of them are well fitted in the story, although I believe that characters like Samantha's father needed to be further developed. Leisha, Tafari, Rinwa, Nikita (Nik), all of them have a very important role and the author can make us look beyond the blood sucking and fights that go on.
I'll try not to do any spoilers. Leisha and Nikita are vampires, Tafari and Rinwa are immortals and Samantha is a human girl with premonitions. With a new vampire boss on town, Leisha goes through a rough patch and Tafari, her husband from many centuries back, comes back to her life to help her, bringing along their daughter, Rinwa. Although they really care for each other, this couple has a lot of problems, some that we can relate to. Leisha and her daughter also have a difficult relationship and I liked the way that that was explored. Samantha and Nik...well it's a bit of the typical teenager romance, but that does not mean that the reader can't appreciate it.
My favourite thing was the end of the book, and you know why? Because I was so caught on it, that I just pressed my tablet for the next chapter and there wasn't one, sadly! The ending was a cliff-hanger, and I just can't wait to read the first book and the third!

Porque quando vi este livro para review na Nerdy Girl Book Reviews, não resisti e nem fui ver ao goodreads se era um livro sozinho ou não. Quando o comecei a ler é que percebi que muito já se tinha passado.
Uma coisa que reparei neste livro foi o facto de haver pequenas semelhanças com os da série Twilight. Mas são pequenas e, para quem gostou até sabem bem, para quem não gostou são indiferentes.
Se me perguntarem qual a personagem principal, admito que, ainda que seja distinguível, é difícil nomear uma, pois todas as personagens e as suas histórias estão interligadas. Samantha, a jovem protagonista, encontra-se, à falta de melhor palavra, numa embrulhada enorme. Desde dramas que quase se podem chamar familiares, a problemas de adolescentes, a vampiros com centenas (alguns com milhares) de anos, a imortais e humanos...diferentes, tudo se passa neste livro.
Acho que não posso dizer que tenha havido uma personagem de que gostei menos, todas elas se enquadravam bem na história, apesar de pensar que personagens como o pai de Samantha precisavam de ser mais desenvolvidas. Leisha, Tafari, Rinwa, Nikita (Nik), todos eles têm um papel importante e autora consegue que deixemos de olhar para eles como simples seres que ou sugam sangue ou só lutam, etc., para seres que, apesar de tudo, têm uma consciência.
Tentando não revelar muito da história, Leisha e Nikita são vampiros, Tafari e Rinwa são imortais e Samantha é uma rapariga humana com visões. Com um novo chefe de vampiros, Leisha passa por um mau bocado e Tafari, o seu marido de há muitos séculos volta à sua vida para a ajudar, e traz consigo a filha de ambos, Rinwa. Ainda que gostem muito um do outro, este casal tem grandes problemas entre si e isso ocupa parte do livro e acho que todos nós nos podemos relacionar, em parte, com os seus problemas maritais. Leisha e a filha também não têm uma boa relação e gostei da maneira como isso foi explorado ao longo do livro. Samantha e Nik… bem é um romance mais típico de adolescentes, mas isso não faz com que não gostemos do que lemos.
O que mais gostei neste livro foi o fim e sabem porquê? Porque me estava a dar tanto gosto ler que nem olhei para as páginas, simplesmente carreguei para o capítulo seguinte e vi que não tinha mais para ler, para tristeza minha. O final foi um cliffhanger tal que estou desejosa de ler o primeiro livro e o terceiro.
Para terminar, gostava apenas de deixar aqui a nota que no início do livro tinha pensado dar 3*, a meio já ia para as 3,5* e, apesar de achar que se calhar não chega às 4*, é melhor que as 3,5*.
