In Skysplitter, Deepak Menon tells the extraordinary tale of an interstellar expedition to the planet Prithna. When researcher John Kriel first reaches this new world, he is greeted by a barrage of ground-based artillery fire from some very startled aliens. Forced to flee, Kriel lands in a deserted, snow-covered area and finds refuge in an abandoned cave. Our scientist now struggles to successfully carry on with the mission until help from Earth can arrive.
Science fiction and action/adventure fans will especially appreciate this novel, as it contains themes such as intergalactic conflict, futuristic technology, alien deception, and war. Told from the point of view of varying characters throughout, such as the alien Zelus, readers will get an interesting and refreshing outlook on the unfolding events. The brilliant descriptions and plethora of well-developed characters make the story endlessly interesting. Because of that, I was completely invested in the plot and was never disappointed.
While I most certainly applaud the very talented and creative author, Skysplitter contains a few aspects that compel me to give only a 3 out of 4 star rating. The grammar, spelling, and punctuation was very sloppy and inconsistent throughout the novel, which sometimes made it quite hard to understand. I often found myself having to read sentences multiple times before figuring out what the author meant.
Despite everything said in the above paragraph, I really did enjoy reading this book. It provided a nice escape from everyday life with all the intricate plot twists and vivid imagery. On top of all that, Deepak Menon managed to explore all the possibilities that a new planet can provide, and went in so many different directions with it. Never once was I bored with the story. In fact, half the time I actually felt like I was right there, going on adventures with the characters. Everything I look for in a good book was provided in this novel.
Skysplitter is most definitely a book that I would recommend to everybody without any hesitation. If you are thinking about giving it a go, I would suggest you have a higher than average reading level due to some of the more advanced concepts. Even though the grammar can be somewhat frustrating at times, looking past it and focusing on the plot will be greatly beneficial. You will not regret reading this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and know that many other readers will too.
