Review of Neon Ashes
Neon Ashes by Lee Dunning is a captivating sci-fi/fantasy novel that explores the impact of immortality on one's perception of life. The story follows Foxfire and W'rath on a perilous journey to pay homage to someone who made the ultimate sacrifice to save humans from a seemingly unkillable being that sought their destruction. Foxfire's search for self-discovery begins on a planet without a trace of technology, where he has befriended W'rath a god-like being and encounters mystical creatures such as giant fuzzy elf-eating worms. This thrilling adventure takes readers on a journey through a world filled with danger, intrigue, and fascinating characters.
The book is beautifully written, with outstanding world and character building and a mature vocabulary. The author masterfully brings together two worlds: a futuristic Earth plagued by pollution, greed, and corruption, and a world filled with mystical creatures and god-like beings. The parallels to our current reality, such as the desire for eternal youth and environmental conservation, are skillfully interwoven with magic and the notion that being out of societal norms means being on the outskirts of society.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Neon Ashes and found no negative aspects. The storytelling, world-building, and character development were all fantastic. However, it's worth noting that Neon Ashes is the second book in a series of side stories called A Chronicles of Shadow Side Story: Tales from Before, During, and After, with the original series being The Chronicles of Shadow, consisting of four books. While it can be read as a standalone novel as the main focus is on different characters, readers who are interested in the full tale should start with the original series. Once I understood where the story was going, it flowed smoothly, and the transition into the secondary story was well done as the author clearly conveys that it's a reenactment of the past that cannot be changed.
In my opinion, Neon Ashes by Lee Dunning deserves a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. The book features a nested narrative that immerses readers in a unique and intriguing Earth, reminding them to seize every opportunity presented, as human life is not immortal. The world-building and character development are outstanding, and the mature vocabulary adds depth and nuance to the story.
I highly recommend Neon Ashes to readers who enjoy sci-fi/fantasy novels, as well as readers who appreciate the art of storytelling and nested narratives. Please note there is some swearing if you're looking to give the book as a gift. Whether you're a fan of The Chronicles of Shadow series or a new reader looking for an intriguing standalone novel, Neon Ashes is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a well-crafted and immersive story.
