Review of Terms of Service
Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill is a futuristic book that involves artificial intelligence (AI) and robots. This story is about Kim and how she was taken care of by her mother until the age of 4. After the age of 4, you are handed over to be raised and molded by mentors. Kim has recurring nightmares and dreams about the four years she spent with her mother. To decrease the nightmares, she drinks vodka to help her sleep. When the mornings come after a night of vodka, she is able to take hangover pills to allow herself to go to work and function. Kim works at the artificial intelligence center. Every day is controlled by artificial intelligence. The refrigerator controls the food she eats from the Food Company. The headset she wears will direct her to use the proper route to work so she can be on time for the Travel Company. They also get their clothes from the Clothes Company and a new style comes out every week. The AI even controls whether her shower is hot or cold. When well-behaved, she could get a warm shower, but if she misbehaves, she will get a cold shower. Kim eventually gets offered the chance to create her own AI named Kimberly.
I enjoyed this book from the very start. It was my first science fiction novel and kept me turning the pages. I just wanted to keep reading to see what was going to happen to Kim next. She was such a rule follower and wanted to be the same as everyone else, but you could just tell by the way it was written that there was more to her than that. What was she going to do when she got the promotion to create her own AI?
The parts I did not like would be the use of pronouns, so everyone is addressed as she/her/hers. I kept wanting to figure out if Kim was a man or a woman, and even at the end of the book I did not know. I also did not like the drug use by the characters to be able to have fun. They always used different drugs depending on what they wanted.
This book gets a 5 out of 5 from me. The author kept me so enthralled and invested in this book that I could not put it down. I enjoyed the VR aspect of how Kim was able to visit with friends or see a ball game. It showed me the possibilities of what AI can do. It can be in robot form and bring you your first cup of coffee, but then it can only feed you tofu and kale from the fridge.
Because of the sexual content and drug use, I would recommend this book to sci-fi and fantasy readers who are more mature. It would be great for anyone interested in a future with AI; it explains the good it can be used for but also the bad.
