Name of the book: Terms of Service

Author’s name: Craig W. Stanfill

Summary: The Book ‘Terms of Service’ written by Craig W. Stanfill, publication of Bad Rooster Press, LLC, revolves around Kim, main lead of the book who is trapped (as I would call it) in the world of AI’s. I was unable to determine the gender of the same because of the use of pronoun she/her regardless of the gender. People living in the world are 24x7 under vigilance of AI, every move and action is recorded and analyzed however personal that may be. It would not be wrong to say that there is no concept of personal or private in the world depicted in this book. Their behavior and the way of living is monitored and rated to provide them with some points that in turn decide which class of the society they’ll reside in. Once Kim and one of her school best friend decides to explore a little beyond the AI world and they end up getting entangled into the trap laid for them. Being under the control of system and not left any choice she was forced to turn herself into something that any of us would not want for us.

Positive: I like how all the social changes are shown in the narrative. For instance, ‘she/her’ is used as a global pronoun for all. The English language is substituted by a global language named ‘Panglobal’ and an orator of English is considered rare and skillful in the era. Usage of ‘I’, often called the ‘I bomb’, is considered offensive as it is considered emphasizing yourself over the collective society they’re working for. In that era the AI’s use personal pronoun ‘I’ but the humans are refrained from using it at all. This very fact is described through this sentence from the book “ AIs that should use ‘we’ and the humans that should use ‘I’”. AIs that should use ‘we’ and the humans that should use ‘I.’AIs that should use ‘we’ and the humans that should use ‘I’ ,they use the pronoun ‘we’ to talk about themselves. There are instances in the book where some humans living away from AI driven world speak English which is written in italic font to indicate that the people are speaking in English. To this the people from AI driven world respond in amazement because they’ve never seen humans speak any other language than Panglobal.

Negative: The story somehow portrays that the future belongs to AI, which is not at all wrong but after reading this book, a fear of living in a world full of automation lingers inside me. This is not the type of world. I was desperate to know answers to some questions that aroused in my mind, what is that one thing that makes a human so? Isn’t it the feelings and the free spirit. Don’t get me wrong because I’m also student working towards Artificial Intelligence, but until now, unlike this book every aspect of it motivated me. What is the value and use of being born as a human when it’s life is strained by AI from and with every aspect. There are many instances in the book that suggests that the human is robbed of it’s very nature because of the technology present around. One of them is shown in this sentence from the book “Impossible! Those were outlawed ages ago! But there it was—a real, breathing, in-the-flesh dog”. This shows that they don’t even know about a fellow creature ‘a dog’ that humans used to adore as a pet animal. Another such incident comes when the main lead in the book is desperate and emotional to know who her real parents are because she was ripped apart from them as soon as she was born. The paragraph goes ‘I know in my heart that she loved you and desperately wanted to stay in your life, but your mentor was such a control freak, it’s hard to imagine any Birth-giver being allowed contact with her charges after parting. Heartless monster.”’

Rating: 5 out of 5

Justifications: I would rate this book a five out of five because it is professionally edited. I didn’t find any mistake in the book. The ideas are clearly depicted in the book also a new style is been adopted by the author to describe every incident happening in the same because I could feel the scenes playing live in my head.

Errors: No errors found. The book is professionally edited
