Review of Terms of Service
Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill is an exciting and revolutionary work of fiction that raises the question about societies, conformity, and individualism. The novel is set in a future civilization where individuality is repressed and expressing such a thing is frowned upon. In this novel, gender and pronouns are blurry. The main protagonist- Kim, is an interesting and nuanced character. She does not embody the typical characteristics of the hero of the story. In the story, she encounters certain people that makes her question her place and purpose in the society. Fighting against the embedded ideologies of society, Kim and her comrades try their best to figure out what to do and break free from the social constructs.
One of the main points I really appreciate about the novel is how it does not shy away from the issue of conformity, particularly with how it takes away the individuality of a person. This is evident in the way the whole society itself is designed in the story. The way using "I/me/my" is considered taboo directly drives home the point of loss of individuality. For the story itself, there is a particular chapter that I truly enjoyed reading. Entitled 'Choose thy Poison', this chapter allowed for a fun and thrilling exchange between the main character and another significant character. It also revealed interesting points that would affect the story going forward. I love how imaginative the author is in making the world feel futuristic. Using appliances to express the futuristic theme of the story is very innovative and fresh. The existence of AIs also allows the reader to recognize that the world is truly set in the future. Another thing worth noting about the novel is the importance of decisions. The flow of the story is also good. There is proper build-up to the climax. While reading Terms of Service, I also did not find much errors- both in spelling and grammar.
I did not find any negative aspects about the novel. This is because I am contented with every element of the story that Craig W. Stanfill wrote. It does not disappoint.
I would rate this book with a 5 out of 5. It deserves such a rating because of how it is written well. It is also edited well, as evidenced by how I couldn't find any errors while I was reading.
I would recommend this novel to tween and older readers who enjoy a sci-fi twist with a bit of drama and action. Readers who are also researching about conformity would also find this book helpful. I wouldn't recommend this book to young readers since they may find it boring due to the lack of pictures and the rather long narration.
