Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies, by Matthew Tysz opens up with Lord Dalehei Meldorath, a fearsome mage orchestrating an attack on Castle Hillport and its Lord Orlin, who had been accused of certain crimes. Three months later, he is in turn arrested and would never, it seemed, be heard from again.
Galen Bray is only twenty years old when he is made the heir of Onita steel by his uncle and has to take over his role as a renowned blacksmith. Presented with an opportunity to leave his homeland and start a new life at Magnum Caelum in the kingdom of Voulhire, he readily welcomes it and does not hesitate to embark on the journey and leave the life that had only known chaos and war in the Land of the Princes behind. He is eager to find out what Voulhire, the magnificent and terrifying kingdom, holds in store for him.
Further into the book, more characters come to light; one of them being the King Wilhelm of Voulhire, his chancellor and the new Lord Eldus Alderman of Hillport. All of whom have different roles and parts to play.
e Are Voulhire, A New Arrival Under Great Skies is a captivating science fiction book, the first in its series, and which commendable plot and captivating characterization is bound to keep the reader on their toes. Although, it started off a bit slow paced, it still managed to keep me entertained the entire time and I found myself starting to really enjoy the book, becoming invested in Voulhire and its occupants.
I like how the book has different perspectives of different characters and yet was made very easy to follow up with and understand. The writing style is unique and very comprehendible. Matthew’s portrayal of this fictional world is very impressive and I enjoyed the balance between magic, politics and relationships. I am curious to find out what becomes of this little world in the other books.
There is nothing I disliked about the book. I found no grammatical errors and can say it was exceptionally edited. I, therefore, give a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good work of magical and fantasy fiction. I, however, include a trigger warning for sensitive audience as the book contains violence and hints of child abuse and pedophilia. It is also best suited for a mature audience as it contains slight profanity.
