Review of Terms of Service
Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill is a dystopian science fiction story with a futuristic setting.
Our protagonist, Kim, is having a typical day when the narrative begins. Everything, whether outdoors or inside the house, appears to have AI. The people are under AI observation twenty-four by seven. Not only do the AIs observe and learn, but they also hunt down criminals and punish those who disobey the law. Kim assists the AIs in understanding the solution in cases where the nature of the crime is unclear.
The main character, Kim, leads a routine existence like anyone else. She works as an AI trainer for a corporation. Kim plans a bike excursion with her friend Shan. Yet they had no idea how much it would affect their future. There is a point system, the hierarchy that evaluates you based on points, and the bigger the number of points one has, the better off they are. With the AIs in control and power at play, what will Kim do to seek her truth in this system?
I loved the character of Kimberly. Thanks to her, Kim’s life felt somewhat complete. Being who she is, Kimberly’s manner of speaking is childlike. She is still in the learning stage when her growth spurts come at an impossibly high speed, like a rollercoaster.
I found the story world quite interesting. For all people on the globe, the pronouns she/her/we are the only option. Although addressing everyone as “she” can be a little confusing, that is the whole point—to perplex them and demonstrate that they are not in authority. The culture was disturbing and suited to the notion of an artificial intelligence dystopia.
The terms of service are subject to change at any time without notice. These are the rules, and breaking them will have serious repercussions. As harsh as it may sound, it is even harder to read how it all happens. At the same time, it’s horrifying and intriguing.
I rate Terms of Service five out of five stars. The plot was fantastic, as was the world, and it made for an excellent read. There was nothing that I disliked about it. I think a professional has skillfully edited the story, as I did not notice any errors. It has a fair amount of drink, drugs, smut, and unhealthy lifestyle. It’s about learning the truth and navigating the dark side of power, and if any of that appeals to you, then this is the book for you. Fans of AI dystopia will enjoy Kim’s story.
