We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies written by Matthew Tysz introduces us to a new and fantastical realm of Voulhire. It is a powerful kingdom moving towards a golden era. The story begins with the protagonist, Galen Bray arriving in Magnum Caelum in the Kingdom of Voulhire from his war-torn homeland. He soon discovers that he has inherited all the fortunes of a recently deceased uncle. His is the classic background story of a struggling, lost boy on his journey to becoming a man. It is a world plagued with dark history where mysterious events keep happening. So, it becomes easy to relate to him and root for the success of this ambitious main character. The story plays out through multiple narratives allowing us a bird’s eye view of all the incidents. The cast of the secondary characters also has a certain depth to it that enhances the plot. Such as the mysterious mage, Meldorath, the former judge, Lord Eldus or Rowan, Galen’s companion. Overall, it is a promising beginning to this thrilling series.

There are many factors that made me enjoy reading this novel. The author has crafted an impressive world with his strong writing and well thought character building. He has also provided a map that transforms this fictional world into a real one for the readers. The story has many layers – a new realm with deep history and a complex political structure, characters that complement each other well, and a multi-faceted plotline. I look forward to reading the other books in this series.

The aspect of the book that I did not appreciate as much was its pace. It is a rather slow-paced novel that takes time to loop in the reader. It does not grab you or pull you in as you would expect from a thriller. Certain parts of the book seem slightly confusing. The choice of the author of using multiple narratives has a drawback. It makes the main objective of the plot somewhat ambiguous.

However, this did not take away from my enjoyment of reading it. There are ample cleverly written twists to keep the reader turning the page. It made up for its flaws towards the end of the book. The author has set a strong foundation that promises an interesting series. For these reasons, I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. The shortcomings of the book are not significant enough to warrant taking away a star. It also seems to be professionally edited since I found only a couple of minor errors that did not hamper the experience of reading it.

I recommend this book to a mature audience who can tolerate a certain amount of gore and violence. I believe this book should be read by those above the age of 17 years. It contains strong language in certain parts along with sexual jokes and remarks. This book is not meant for the faint-hearted. Those looking to try out the fantasy genre will find it to be a great book.
