Bigotry in any form is a terrible disservice to mankind. Frustrating Fascination by Debra McKenzie addresses this problem in a captivating plot bound to make any reader pause and reflect.

Sean Barton thinks he is a good person. Sure, he has flaws, but overall, he believes he has a good character. Okay, so maybe he’s a bit biased about people with a different sexual orientation. He might even despise them a little, especially after his beloved spouse left him for another woman. Yet, he doesn’t think he hates them. As long as they don’t bother him, all is right with the world. Then he wakes up one morning, and suddenly, he is the very person he secretly despises.

Walking in someone else’s shoes has just taken on a literal meaning….

I loved reading this book. It was so engrossing that I finished it in one sitting. I liked how it addressed a very delicate issue sensitively. The sad truth is that even though we live in the 21st century, the world can still be prejudiced against people with different sexual orientations. The author uses this plot to send a powerful message; judging when you are not wearing someone else’s shoes is easier. For some people, empathy can only be felt through experience.

The character development is also top-notch. I was immediately drawn to Bruce. His character was patient and loyal, the kind of person you would always want to have in your corner. He stayed true to himself and never tried to hide his orientation. In both alternate universes, this character never changes. It just proves that sexual orientation has nothing to do with a person’s character.

There’s nothing I disliked about the book. I am a big fan of sci-fi /fantasy books, and this didn’t disappoint. It also makes me want to show more empathy to people who are different from me in any way. As a rule, people always fear what they do not understand. And what they fear, they despise. Perhaps we can try respecting people’s choices even if we don’t understand them.

Overall, I’ll rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. The resounding message in the plot is loud and clear. I spotted only one error, so it is professionally well-edited. It is an adult book with profanity and graphic erotic scenes. I would not recommend it to a younger/sensitive audience. I would recommend this book to any mature adult struggling with their sexual orientation and who needs encouragement to face the world and their fears. Life is tough enough without having to worry about being true to yourself.
