Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies, written by Matthew Tysz, is a medieval fantasy novel taking place in the country of Voulhire. The story follows Galen, a blacksmith's nephew who escapes his home of the Lands of the Princes after he is called to a place in Voulhire, Magnum Caelum, to take over his uncle's estate and continue his work. Galen takes the opportunity presented to him and reaches Magnum Caelum, where he gets to experience the country of Voulhire. Meanwhile, A dark magical force wreaks havoc on a different side of Voulhire, leading the king and a newly appointed Lord of Hillport, Eldus, to investigate the problems left within the city.
I personally really enjoyed this book. I have read medieval fantasy before, so I expected that there was a massive world with way too many characters, storylines, and advanced terms used. However, this book is written in a way that anyone can follow. The writing is not overly descriptive, and simple language is used. The story only addresses necessary events if needed for the main story. However, you can read further into the lore if it is what you would like to do. The main character, Galen, is new to the world of Voulhire, just as the readers are. So, the readers can follow Galen as he learns about this new world he enters. The story is not restricted to Galen's point of view, as we get to see other characters who are essential to the story. I enjoyed the author's choice to make Galen's point of view first person while every other aspect is third person. It made Galen's presence in the book more memorable and gave an interesting story that is not constrained to Galen. The book makes a presence by having a rich and whole world that knows where it stands but doesn't push itself on you. The story unfolds itself in necessary layers while giving you time to understand the world and the chance to fall in love with the characters.
I had a hard time finding anything wrong with this book. It is an introductory novel to a story that will consist of nine novels. It doesn't have a world-threatening climax because the world is still developing, and the readers are still learning about the characters. However, knowing this, the author did an excellent job with the novel's ending, as I definitely would want to read more of this story.
My rating for this book is 5 out of 5 stars. This book was professionally edited, as I saw no errors in my duration of reading this book. The book exceeded my expectations and had a fascinating story. The writing was not pretentious but kept my attention. I am excited to read more of this series.
I recommend this book to people who enjoy fantasy, specifically medieval fantasy. I also recommend this book to people who want books that take them out of their world and into the one in the book. Lastly, and most importantly, I recommend this book to anyone and everyone. There is no restriction or limitations on this book. Anyone could enjoy reading this.
