Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill is a fiction novel that takes you to the future where peace reigns, or so it is made to seem. The story tells of a future where there are no wars. In this era, the population is forced to follow the rules for the betterment of society. As in every era, some people have powerful positions, and in this era, they want nothing more than to keep that power, and they will use extreme means to do so and will not hesitate to make an example out of anyone that stands in their way. The civilization is run and overseen by artificial intelligence. The artificial intelligence monitors every individual's movements, even listening to the populace at all hours. From birth, every citizen has an identification chip embedded into their arm. That chip tracks their every move, so even in this age of peace, freedom is a word rarely used because one can never be free in this new world. The protagonist is Kim, and she has a willpower not seen in any of the mindless inhabitants. That makes Kim question the world around her. She finds herself being unhappy, which started when she was younger. She was removed from her mother's care when she turned 4, which happens to all children. A new guardian then becomes their caregiver. This person becomes their mentor and coaches them to be model citizens in this no-nonsense era driven by artificial intelligence. So what will Kim do to make herself feel happy again, and what price will she have to pay?

Terms of Service is a well-written book with a gripping story of people who have been herded like sheep with one wrong move causing them to get into serious trouble, which had me in disbelief but also made the novel more interesting. I liked the growth of Kim's character. She went from being a good citizen to questioning everything she knew. I enjoyed seeing her character grow into something new and rebellious. I enjoyed the back-and-forth Kim would have with the refrigerator, which was funny at times, seeing that the refrigerator was nothing but an appliance but always managed to get under her skin.

The book has a slow pace at the beginning, but that quickly changes as you get further into the story. There were a few terms used throughout the story that confused me. A glossary with those terms would have helped a lot in understanding some of the things mentioned in the book, making it easier to understand. I would have liked more explanations of how some advanced technology functions, such as the chips implanted in the arm, how it transmits a signal, and what powers it.

Terms of Service is an intriguing story of a futuristic world filled with propaganda. It seems fun to live in, but you will find out that it has a dark side, being that the order they managed to achieve after such a long time could not be maintained without sacrifice. There is always something new happening as new revelations come to light which will have you turning each page to find out what will happen next. I rate Terms of Service 5 out of 5 stars.

I recommend this book to those who enjoy reading about a futuristic world where things are done for the greater good of man. It shows you the problems our species might face if we continue on the destructive path we are currently on. The book has advanced technology, problem-solving, betrayal, friendship, and love. This novel is suitable for those who are teenagers and older.
