Terms of service by Craig W. Stanfill, is an alternate universe, science fiction novel that highlights one of humanity’s greatest threat: Artificial Intelligence. Kim, a young woman working for an AI company, is thrown into a world of chaos and disorder when she meets up with her college friend who lives a life of risk. In this reality, AI monitors everything people do; it owns them so to speak. Kim lives a seemingly normal life where she goes to work, engages in recreational activities, and spends time with friends; most of these things happen through virtual reality! Everything “normal” that Kim knows, is all thrown into disarray after she decides to go on a bicycle ride with her college friend Shan.

I loved this book for so many reasons. First of all, it’s on the theme with the current state of the world where AI is becoming more prominent, and raising a cause for concern. It’s interesting to see a world depicted, where AI is so imbedded in our lives that we have no semblance of freedom or privacy.

The world-building was interesting as well, painting the world where Kim lived as bland as possible which would no doubt rob anyone of their identity, and make them easier to control. That is what the Artificial Intelligence organization in this book did.

Of course, in a world where what is deemed as normal human interactions isn't allowed, there would be need for a catalyst of some sort to facilitate these activities. Which is where the extensive drug use came from. I did not appreciate that fact very much, but I understood why it was necessary in the story. It was on-theme. I can appreciate great writing without liking the content, and that was, indeed, great writing. The only thing I disliked about the book was that Kim's life was bland and uninteresting to a fault. I was a bit bored in the beginning because the objective of the book was taking long to take off.

Other than that, everything else was well-written. I did not note any errors while reading, owing to the fact that the book is well-edited and exceptionally so! I give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars because the minor discrepancies I have with it are just that; Minor.

I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy books based in an alternate universe, as well as science fiction lovers. It also addresses some political issues that we see in our modern-day reality that may be of interest to readers who enjoy such themes. I would not recommend it for younger readers as it contains strong language of a sexual nature.
