“When the Absence returns and oblivion tolls thrice, my essence will fill the male offspring of a human maiden. This vessel of my power will be both your salvation and your ruin”

Querc never felt like he belonged in Noncack. He never had the same level of trust in the Elders as other townsfolk, like his fiancée Zea. This controlled and ordered life soon comes crashing down after a mysterious man appears, on the brink of death, in his village and gives him a bottle, telling him to guard it with his life and escape Noncack, with a warning that there are now others hunting him.

Querc is forced into his destiny, a mission of saving all of creation of the Architect from the demon Atropa, with the help of his fiancée Zea. Atropa has friends in the highest of places which could make Querc’s task all the more challenging.

I really did enjoy ‘The Architect’s Essence’. It would be a great addition to your book collections if you are an avid fantasy reader, as I am. I loved the imaginative world that D.R.Johnson has created. Every fantasy creature you can think of was in the book. It was nice to see that the ‘evil’ characters was not always one race like it can be in other books.

I thought the overall story of the book was very well thought out, with small hints of things to come and some very well planned surprises in the story. I found this kept me very entertained, not knowing what’s going to come round the corner. With such an amazing prologue at the beginning, I was hooked!

There were only a few negatives with the writing of the book. I found that the ending was just a little rushed and seemed to be cut too short in the last chapter, ready for the next book in the series. This was however aided a little with the epilogue, however a bit more of a fuller ending would have been preferred.

The other issue that other’s may find in the book, is that there are passages that can be quite gruesome and if you don’t have a strong stomach, you may not enjoy. I didn’t have any issues with this, but those with a weak stomach beware.

Overall I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. It was definitely a good read and I would recommend it to those who love fantasy. The book is superbly written, which is why the rushed ending took me so much by surprise and lead me to deduct one star from the scoring.

I only found out at the end that this was the author’s first book, which, I have to say, you cannot tell when reading it. Congratulations D.R.Johnson. If the first book is this good, I really do look forward to what’s to come.
