Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
"We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" is the first entry in an ambitious new fantasy series by author Matthew Tysz. Set in a complex and imaginative world, this book tells the story of Galen Bray, a refugee who has fled his war-torn homeland and immigrated to the advanced and knowledgeable country of Voulhire. As Galen explores this new land and learns more about its people and their relationship with the universe, he also discovers that there are those who seek power and destruction in this world and beyond.
Tysz has created a rich and detailed world in Voulhire, with a strong emphasis on spirituality and philosophy. The exposition can be dense at times, but the author has a talent for weaving meaning into even the most minute details of the world-building. The themes of gratitude and hope are woven throughout the narrative, lending a sense of optimism to a story that could easily become dark and nihilistic.
Galen is a sympathetic and relatable protagonist, struggling to adapt to a new way of life while grappling with the trauma of his past. His journey of self-discovery is compelling, and his growing affection for Voulhire and its people is infectious. The supporting cast is similarly well-drawn, with a diverse range of personalities and motivations. The villains are suitably menacing, but even they are given depth and complexity that makes them more than mere caricatures.
Tysz's writing is polished and confident, with a strong sense of pacing and a clear understanding of when to slow down and when to ratchet up the tension. The action scenes are well-choreographed and exciting, but the real strength of the book lies in its quieter moments, when Galen is reflecting on his experiences and the reader is given a deeper understanding of the world around him.
As Tysz notes in his introduction, this book is just the beginning of a larger story, and as such it does end on something of a cliffhanger. However, this is not a cheap ploy to sell more books - the ending feels earned and satisfying, while still leaving plenty of threads to be explored in future installments.
Overall, "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" is an impressive debut from a promising new voice in the fantasy genre. Tysz's world-building is top-notch, his characters are compelling, and his themes are thought-provoking. Fans of epic fantasy should definitely give this one a look.
"We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies"exceptionally edited and free of errors. I, thereby, rate it 5 out of 5 stars because of this and other reasons I mentioned earlier.
Lovers of science fiction novels will find this book a great delight to read. It contains all that a good science fiction novel has to offer to be called sci-fi. I recommend that they read it.
