Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
The novel takes place on the fictional island of Voulhire, and it presents a diverse range of perspectives from various residents of the island, mostly belonging to the higher social class. Galen Bray, a newcomer to Voulhire, also contributes to the narrative with his point of view. While the higher caste is knowledgeable about Voulhire's history, traditions, and current events, Galen is not. Throughout the book, the reader is exposed to new information about the island's history, customs, enigmatic past, and supernatural abilities.
I appreciated the book's use of Galen's first-person point of view alongside the third-person perspective. This choice enhanced my reading experience by providing a more complete understanding of the story and creating a balanced representation of the characters. The characters were well-crafted, with Galen's development being particularly noteworthy. The inclusion of a reference guide was a unique feature, deviating from the typical world-building style. The first book in the series effectively sets the stage for Voulhire and its inhabitants, introducing the land's history, neighboring islands, and geography with the help of a map. The author's descriptions of the landscapes, townships, magical characters, and fantastic events further amplified the book's fantasy theme, creating an immersive reading experience.
As I immerse myself in the story of Galen, I can't help but find his journey both enjoyable and hopeful. It's heartwarming to think that he may finally break free from the bleak environment of his upbringing and explore the wonders of a new world. When Galen arrives in Voulhire, my enjoyment only increases as he experiences everything in this magical place for the first time, and I'm able to see it through his eyes.
The author masterfully builds suspense, keeping me on edge and eager to discover what happens next. This is particularly impressive as the book is the first in a series and sets the stage for future installments. I'm already eagerly anticipating the next book, and I have no doubt that other readers will feel the same way. Overall, the novel was a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
There was nothing I disliked about We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz. The book was exceptionally edited. Therefore, I would give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy and adventure novels. The story of Galen and his journey to a new world is both captivating and heartwarming, and the author's writing style expertly builds suspense, making the story exciting and immersive.
