We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Mathew Tysz is a well-crafted and engaging fantasy novel. As the first book in a series, it centres around the great city of Voulhire, which is portrayed as a land of opportunities where magic and the physical world coexist. However, beneath the surface, the city is plagued by internal conflicts and rivalries among its leaders and inhabitants. These issues have a significant impact on the city's politics, wars, families, laws, economic prosperity, trust, technology, and cultural significance. Overall, the novel provides a captivating and suspenseful glimpse into the complex world of Voulhire.

The book centres around two protagonists, the first being Galen Bray, who flees the ongoing sibling rivalry in The Land of Princes to start a new life in Voulhire. Galen is fascinated by the technology and lifestyle of the great city and receives help from his grand uncle's executive, Rowan, who ensures that Galen inherits his uncle's fortunes and blacksmith business. Galen and Rowan become friends and work together to elevate the business. The second protagonist, Lord Eldus Alderman, is on a mission to uncover the truth behind the horrific acts committed by the previous Lords, namely Lord Orlin and Lord Meldorath, which still threaten Voulhire. Eldus embarks on a journey that leads him to confront the fearsome Lord Meldorath, who is plotting the destruction of Voulhire and building an army known as the Riva Rohavi.

I admire the author's incredible imagination and skilful world-building in this fantasy novel, which creates a captivating and immersive reading experience. One aspect I particularly enjoyed was the author's innovative approach to storytelling, using multiple character perspectives instead of traditional chapter divisions. This allows for a deeper understanding of each character's motivations and actions and how they contribute to the overall plot. The story is full of unexpected twists and turns, keeping the reader engaged and on edge. Additionally, the author provides readers with helpful resources, such as maps and a reference guide, to better understand the intricate world he has created. He also offers a website that offers further insights into the history of the kingdom and Voulhire, demonstrating his commitment to creating a fully-realized and believable world. This book is perfect for those who enjoy a mix of history, adventure, science, and politics.

I found nothing to dislike about this book. Its themes revolve around power and politics, identity and belonging, conflict and rivalry, and technology and magic. I highly recommend this book to fantasy fans, especially those who appreciate stories with rich world-building, multidimensional characters, and political scheming. Readers who enjoy historical fiction, adventure, and science fiction would also find it appealing.

I gave this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars due to the author's impressive creativity and skill in constructing and developing the fantasy world. The story was not only enjoyable but also a quick read. The novel delves into the complex power dynamics of Voulhire, where leaders and citizens influence politics, war, family, law, economics, trust, technology, and culture. The book was exceptionally well-edited and free from errors.
