Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
Matthew Tysz's We are Voulhire; A New Arrival under Great Skies is an enchanting work of fiction set in the imaginative world of Voulhire. While providing a delightful escape from reality, the story delves into thought-provoking subjects that are highly relevant to our everyday lives. It explores themes such as power struggles, political and social instability, rivalry in the industrial sector, religion, education, terror, war, and hope, among others.
The events of the narrative unfold within the fantastical realm of Voulhire, where a cast of characters each plays a significant role. One perspective focuses on Galen Bray, the central protagonist, who flees from the Lands of the Princes to Voulhire at the request of his great uncle. His purpose is to continue his uncle's prosperous blacksmithing business and secure his inheritance. Guided by Rowan, his uncle's attorney, Galen learns the necessary skills and knowledge. With great anticipation, Galen envisions a captivating and meaningful life in Magnum Caelum, determined to make the most of the extraordinary opportunities bestowed upon him. In comparison to the place he narrowly escaped, Voulhire appears as a paradise to Galen. On the other side, there is the account of Lord Eldus, a just and righteous man appointed by King Wilhelm to govern Hillport following the demise of Lord Meldorath. The people of Hillport have endured not only political instability but also fear and trepidation due to the malevolent powers of Meldorath, a formidable and influential wizard. Lord Eldus bears the responsibility of bringing growth and order to Hillport, assuring its residents that Meldorath is truly deceased.
The book proved to be a captivating read, and the comprehensive character list provided at the beginning greatly facilitated my reading experience. Furthermore, the inclusion of definitions for various fictional terms at the end of the book enhanced my understanding of the narrative. The author's unique and engaging writing style was evident throughout the story, exemplified by the clever use of lowercase letters to form the initial letter of the priest's name, "eiodi," which added to the character's sense of reverence. Moreover, the vivid descriptions of the sky at different points in the narrative painted a compelling image of Voulhire as a nation blessed with enchanting and persistent Northern lights, leaving a lasting impression.
Every aspect of the book provided immense enjoyment for me and I disliked nothing about it. While the initial chapters presented a slightly ambiguous direction for the plot, clarity gradually emerged as the pieces of the puzzle began to fit together. The author skillfully crafted the progression of the storyline, building up the suspense with expertise. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to individuals who relish the genres of fantasy, fiction, paranormal tales, action-packed narratives, and mystical stories infused with elements of magic.
I gave this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. The author demonstrates exceptional skill in seamlessly integrating social hierarchies into the narrative, creating an authentic and impactful portrayal. The social order depicted in the story is clearly outlined and easily discernible, showcasing a system of "checks and balances" that fosters accountability within the society. Moreover, the book is impressively well-written, exceptionally well-edited, and remarkably error-free. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the author for a job well done, and I eagerly anticipate delving into the remaining stories in the series.
