I have rated We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies written by Matthew Tysz a 5 out of 5 stars. This is for a number of things, including the amazing vocabulary, great descriptions, and creative world-building seen in this book.
The character log in the beginning is an amazing idea and helped me quite a bit throughout the first little bit of the book with figuring out who the characters were and how they fit into the story. The beginning hook was also written really nicely and got me interested in the book immediately. The gore is really well written and the way it was described made it very easy to picture.
Another thing that I loved about this book was how the author told the backstories of the characters. The way he fit it into the book wasn’t choppy and neither was how the backstory or flashback ended.
The dialogue was fun to read and the character interaction differed every time, nothing was repeated unless necessary. The different personalities of the characters was a joy to read and you can tell the world-building had a lot of thought put into it and that everything was planned out thoroughly, leaving no plot gaps.
There is a good amount of humour within the book but not enough to distract you from the plot or the severity of the problems within.
The multiple POVs might make it slightly confusing for someone not used to reading something with multiple perspectives, but again, that’s where the character log is really helpful.
There is also a dictionary at the back of the book of the terms used in the book that might not make sense to the reader and that is an amazing idea to help the readers understand the world that much more.
I feel as though this is an amazing introduction to the series.
