Terms of Service: Subject to Change Without Notice by Craig W. Stanfill is a fascinating story about government regulation and artificial intelligence. It is set in the distant (or not so distant) future, depending on your view of the world today. The main character, Kim, is relatable even though her world is filled with artificial intelligence technology. The culture in which Kim lives has many unique social conventions including: not using the pronoun I, government regulation of relationships and children being taken away from their birth parents to be raised by “mentors”.

The author captures your attention right away by explaining the main differences between our world today and the world this book is set in. It is told from the perspective of Kim, a relatable character who lives in a future world that is plausible. The author reveals Kim’s inner thoughts and feelings and how, in some situations, she is not able to express how she feels or what she thinks for one reason or another.

Even though it is good for us to read, it can be hard to relate to a book where the culture and world are so different from our own. However, I think that the author has done a great job in explaining and providing details on this to help the reader get into the book.

I would rate this book four out of five stars. The writing, editing and the story are exceptional. The book is easy to read in terms of the reader being drawn into the story and I liked that the individual chapters weren’t too long. This makes it easy to read as you find bits of time throughout your day.

I would recommend this book to adults or young adults that like reading science fiction or about artificial intelligence. I believe that most science fiction readers would love this book. Additionally, someone that is looking for “something different” to read, would find that something here. This book could also be useful for someone wanting to open a dialogue on the pros and cons of government regulation.
