Fevre Dream was an interesting and fast paced read. It revolved around a few main characters, the most important of which being Captain Abner Marsh. Marsh has a dream of building the fastest steamboat to outrace the current leader on the river. He owns a steamboat company that was once prospering with many ships, but due to a recent series of bad luck, he's down to only one. He's given up his dream until a mysterious man named Joshua York arrives and wishes to become a partner in the steamboat company. Joshua offers exorbitant amounts of money to Abner to build the steamboat of his dreams with only the rule that he not ask any questions about Joshua's odd behavior, which includes only coming out only at night and bringing similar guests on board with him. Abner is initially fine with this arrangement, but gradually becomes more curious about Joshua and his friends. Since this is a vampire book you know that this is typical vampire behavior, but it's hard to know whether or not to trust Joshua. His outward gentlemanly appearance may be hiding the beast within. On the other hand, there is another vampire named Damon Julian who is flat out evil. He wants respect from other vampires and loves killing human who is views as an inferior species, mere cattle compared to them.

I thought Fevre Dream was a unique take on vampire genre. They followed some of the typical vampire traits such as drinking blood and sensitivity to light, but Martin changed them enough to make them one of a kind. The theme is mostly good vs evil but it includes grey areas that Martin likes to use as well. Not everyone is clear-cut good or evil in this book. Overall I would give this book 4/5 stars and would definitely recommend for fans of the vampire genre
