We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz

Galen Bray escapes the warring islands by boat and makes it to the mainland of Voulhire, a dominant kingdom that's enjoying its golden age. In the process of starting his life afresh, Galen is quick to make connections with the local mayor and Rowan, his executor. To find the social and financial balance he sets working at his late uncle's forge as his main priority although there is a sense of doubt if this newfound peace will last.

Galen's new world of Voulhire is as unique as its powerful, ruled by the ever-vigilant King Wilhelm, a king loved and revered by his subjects. Another notable presence is the sly chancellor, Midius Maido, his presence in the palace brings an unsettling feeling. Away from the palace mind games are the lives of Marshus and Isla Alderman, the children of Eldus Alderman a great man in his own right.

Galen's new world might be flourishing but that shouldn't give a wrong picture, it has its nightmares too, the Riva Rohavi. These rebels somehow seem to be the kingdom's eternal rivals and as if that's not enough there is a certain name that spreads a chilling energy throughout the entire kingdom and disrupts a good mood, the name "Meldorath", the kingdom's hero gone villain.

What makes this journey so captivating is its wide array of characters all unique in their way, the loose relationships and unstable alliances. Everything is well thought out and perfectly executed. The character development is so easy to follow from the brewing conflicts between the king and his Mianoran chancellor to the intriguing interactions between Marshus and his father Eldus Alderman. The pacing is amazing and well anchored by good writing skills that persuade the reader to read on. I found nothing negative about this great work, therefore am rating it 5 out of 5.

People that love suspense and mind games would enjoy it. Another sweet fact is that it covers many age groups.
