Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
The kingdom of Voulhire has entered a golden age, and its people gather to celebrate their prosperity and pray for a prosperous future. However, the southern town of Voulhire, Hillport, does not share in this prosperity. Their trade is down, they lack a proper education system, and they can barely afford medication. Voulhire's king, Wilhelm Arcolo, sends his trusted friend, Eldus Alderman, to be Hillport's new lord. Meldorath, a powerful mage and retired general, spends his time uncovering a secret world of magic. He, however, uses questionable means to achieve this. This leads to his arrest by the king's decree. A lot of people think he's dead, despite assurances from the king. Citizens live in constant fear that Meldorath, if alive, would resurface and continue in his oppressing ways. The Riva Rohavi are violent insurgents who, since time immemorial, have worked hard to bar Voulhire's prosperity. They plot in secret places on how to make Voulhire fall. A young man called Galen Bray finds refuge in Voulhire when his bedridden uncle sends for him to be found. He is revised from the Lands of the Princes. His uncle leaves him his business to take over. He struggles to assimilate in this new place, this magical and mysterious kingdom.
I loved the book. Simple language is used to describe events and scenes. Additionally, the author uses vivid descriptions to give the reader finer details. I found the use of suspense refreshing. Such was the case when the monk Demetrius questioned the genuineness of Galen's kindness. I sure look forward to reading the next book in the series.
I did not like that the usefulness of some characters was short-lived. Such characters include, but are not limited to, the Aldermans. There was also the use of conversations that contained sexual jokes, which I did not find thrilling.
I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars. First, it is exceptionally well edited. Secondly, the author deals with one character at a time, rendering the flow of the book smooth. Lastly, the book left me in suspense, yearning to know what would happen afterwards.
I recommend We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz to lovers of adventure novels. The book is best suited for readers over the age of eighteen. Also, those into fantasy or fiction novels will love the book and are sure to find it enthralling.
