Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is a book that follows Galen Bray, the protagonist. With war raging in the Land of the Princes, Galen finds an opportunity to escape when his uncle in Voulhire dies and leaves everything he owned to Galen. He boards a ship and heads to Magnum Cealum, where he inherits his uncle's forge and becomes a blacksmith.
Events soon start to unfold after Galen arrives at Magnum Cealum. He meets Rowan, his uncle's financial solicitor, and together they head out on an adventure that leads to the discovery of a magical rock.
I like how the author built every character in this story. He gave each character a little background story that leads up to who the character is in the story. He displayed this perfectly through Beth. The moment he introduces her arrival in Caromentis, he gives us her background and the events that led to her appearance in Voulhire.
I also like how the author portrays naivety, humor, and empathy through Galen. I particularly like how empathetic Galen was to the plight of the workers at the mine in Alcovia. He showed this when he stepped in to fight for them against the brutal supervisor, who kicked and insulted the workers.
Furthermore, the author built a perfect universe for this story. He describes each town and city in great detail. I felt present in Yamon Soul with Rowan and Galen as they walked through the streets and toward the church to find an imbuer. The level of detail the author put into describing the interior of the church was astounding, especially the portrait of God.
Although it's almost impossible not to like everything about this wonderfully told story, I did not enjoy the author's attempt at creating a mystery around General Meldorath in scenarios where the reader already knows for sure who the character involved is. This happened many times, especially towards the end, when we had already been properly introduced to Meldorath and knew for sure he was the one in a particular scenario. An example of this was when he arrived in Hillport aboard his ship after his victory over Captain Barcaedi and escape from Lucia's Isle. I observed that the author kept on describing him as "the man in the heavy blue robe and a hood." Such descriptions felt needless to me, seeing as the mystery had been unraveled and the reader already knew who Meldorath was.
Nevertheless, I rate this book five out of five stars. Its editing is flawless, and I did not find any errors while reading. The editor did a great job.
I recommend this book to readers who enjoy stories with magic and fictional fantasy. The author keeps you spellbound with every page you turn.
