In the southern coast of the mythical world of Pangaea, we find the realm known as Pyrrhos, home to the Titaians, the fire people. The fire people have a beautiful history steeped in traditions and rituals. Among these traditions is the Fire Festival, a series of four tasks: communication, honesty, logic, and strength, that determine the next Queen for the realm. Those who will compete for the privilege of being the next Queen are the girls who, at birth, exhibited the four fires (green for fear, orange for anger, pink for love, and blue for sadness).

The story begins with the birth of the princesses: Kenna, Fia, Anala, Hesta, and Blaise. From the time of their births until their sixteenth year, the girls are taken to live in the palace and sequestered, where they train and are schooled in the history of their people, and where they wait for their chance to compete to be the next Queen. While following the princesses through the four tasks, disaster strikes, and it becomes evident that something is happening in Pangaea that threatens all of the realms.

Fire Dancer by Echo Fox is a sci-fi/fantasy novel and the fourth book of the Equiliria series. Although written as part of a series, it can be read as a stand-alone novel. The novel is loosely based on Greek mythology, but Fox does an incredible job of creating an entire world and an entire race that is entirely new and very refreshing. Fox paints a beautifully vivid picture of Pyrrhos and the Titaian people. The story follows the five princesses with a focus on Kenna, although aspects of the story are told from Blaise's point of view. The plot is engaging and moves at a reasonable pace throughout; never feeling too fast or too slow. There is enough action and progression to keep the story moving forward, but not so much as to feel rushed, and there is humor sprinkled throughout the novel, keeping it light and entertaining as well.

The language of the novel is wonderfully chosen and often formal, giving an added feeling of being transported to a different place and time, although occasionally the narration slips into current slang. Fox keeps the story interesting, with the main plot-line as well as a sub-plot that, I suspect, runs throughout the series. There are twists and turns, and several developments in the climax that keep the reader on the edge of their seat, fervently turning the page to find out what happens next. I rate this book a solid 4 out of 4 stars.

I would highly recommend Fire Dancer to anyone who loves a good sci-fi/fantasy novel. Given the content, it is appropriate for a young adult audience, but it is certainly engaging enough to capture the attention and imagination of any age group.

This book sounds amazing. Totally like the notion of the four different colored fires. Great review, Bookaholic!

Great review. I read this earlier last year ago and loved it. I thought Air Riders was the strongest in the collection but I think each book appeals to a slightly different reader. There's always so much depth with Echo
