Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first book in the Voulhire series, focusing on the political and social life of the fictional realm of Voulhire. The novel delves into themes of power struggles, betrayal, and the corrupting influence of greed. It portrays a society where the quest for power has undermined the well-being of its citizens, especially those already facing poverty. Loyalty, magic, royalty, mystery, and power are key themes explored, alongside friendship and obedience.
The story follows Wilhelm Arcolo, the monarch of Voulhire, as he battles the Mianoran Council and the supposedly deceased lord Meldorath of Hillport, who seeks to regain power. Eldus Alderman, a former judge, is appointed as the ruler of Hillport and must not only rebuild the town but also confront the vengeful Meldorath. Meanwhile, Galen Bray, a young man fleeing from war, is guided by his great-uncle's instructions to inherit his enterprises. With the help of Rowan, Galen embarks on a transformative journey in Magnum Caelum, a welcoming place in Voulhire.
The inclusion of a map at the beginning of the book is a valuable addition. It allows readers to visualize the geographical locations of the towns mentioned throughout the story and understand the distances between them. This map serves as a helpful reference for readers to follow the characters' movements across different towns. Another commendable feature is the inclusion of a dictionary of names and terminology at the end of the book. This provides readers with a convenient resource to better understand and remember the unique terms and descriptions used in the kingdom of Voulhire. Overall, these thoughtful additions enhance the reading experience and aid in the comprehension of the book's setting
I found no faults with the book and highly recommend it to fantasy book enthusiasts. The captivating narrative of the Voulhire Empire will particularly appeal to science fiction fans. However, sensitive readers should be cautious as the book contains some disturbingly violent scenes
I gave this book a perfect overall rating of 5 out of 5 stars due to the impeccable editing reflected in the absence of grammatical errors and the book's captivating exploration of the corrupting influence of power and the value of loyalty and friendship.
