Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
Matthew Tysz's "We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies" takes readers to the kingdom of Voulhire, where a lowly refugee named Galen Bray finds himself in the midst of a tumultuous realm. Tysz introduces an engaging group of characters, including a benevolent monarch, a strong mage, and a corrupt knight, all of whom play crucial roles in the events that follow.
The author builds an intriguing story, beginning with a serene atmosphere and gradually increasing tension to draw in the reader.. While there isn’t a lot of action in the novel, Tysz makes up for it with well-thought-out plotlines and a welcome break from traditional fantasy cliches. The lack of odd creatures and animals creates a distinct universe, which is supplemented by fleeting allusions to a parallel magical realm known as Caromentis.
The book’s appeal rests in its realistic approach, which focuses on the protagonists’ everyday struggles rather than relying on fantastical elements. The characters are well-developed and relatable, having flaws and motivations of their own. Galen, in particular, acts as a lens through which readers may experience the splendors and perils of Voulhire as he navigates political intrigue and finds disturbing secrets about his companions.
Tysz’s writing style is appealing and engrossing, brilliantly creating the atmosphere and leaving readers eager for the next books in the series. The author’s ability to grab the reader’s interest, as well as his unique perspective on the fantasy genre, makes “We Are Voulhire” an interesting and unique reading experience.
It is worth mentioning, however, that the book’s slower pace and philosophical components may not appeal to many readers, particularly those who are used to fast-paced action and instant fulfillment. Furthermore, younger readers or those with less patience may need to be patient due to the complicated web of characters and the delayed development of the major conflict. Tysz’s writing, despite being appealing and engrossing, suffers from what most self-publishing writers suffer: a poor edition, with many missing commas and grammar issues.
Overall, “We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies” is a well-thought-out and engrossing fantasy story. Tysz's novel is a great start to the series and features excellent world-building and characters that stand out. I give it a 4 out of 5.
