Matthew Tysz’s We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is the first novel in what I think will prove to be a compelling and unique epic. Planned to span nine books, this initial volume is told through vignettes that form a complex story of political power struggles and the citizens that get caught in the middle. A New Arrival under Great Skies tells the tale of a refugee named Galen, a king, his corrupt general, and the family of a lord set to take over the governance of the town of Hillport. Through the telling of seemingly insignificant occurrences, the plot unfolds slowly in a subtle but provocative manner. Tsyz’s writing is sophisticated, the editing impeccable. He creates hilarious and scathing scenarios to portray the corruption in Voulhire in a way that reminds me of classic satire writers like Jonathan Swift. But instead of Lilliput, I found myself in a fascinating society of dancing rebel assassins, powerful and terrifying mages, heroic knights and secretive kings.

Tysz’s writing isn’t for everyone, but if you like complex storytelling, and are a fan of Lovecraftian horror or dark fantasy, I highly recommend this book. I am struggling to find anything I don’t like about the novel; it’s possibly the best thing I have read this year so far. I knew I was reading a 5 star book after the first few chapters and the rest of the book continued to deliver. I feel confident that I will thoroughly enjoy the rest of the series. I enjoy a lot of contemporary fantasy writing but It’s not often I find a writer to be so surprising and unique. Tysz isn't just a great storyteller; he elevates the genre to an art form. 5 out of 5 stars!

Matthew Tysz did wonders in this book. The way he conferred up this fantasy story still amazes me. Voulhire sounds both ordinary and extraordinary. I just liked this book's plot. Great review.
