Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
Matthew Tysz's We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies takes readers on a captivating journey through the prosperous kingdom of Voulhire and its intriguing inhabitants. The story is narrated by Galen Bray, a runaway immigrant from the Land of the Princes. In this tale, the powerful mage, Lord Meldorath, seeks control over Caromentis, a realm that once evoked fear in him. As he faces arrest, Hillport, a city struggling to establish its prominence in Voulhire, becomes entangled in the aftermath. The actions of the great lord may determine whether revenge or mercy befall the people of Hillport.
Eldus, appointed by the King as the Lord of Hillport, endeavors to revitalize the town, which has long suffered under the oppressive rule of Orlin and Meldorath. With the support of his family, Eldus envisions transforming Hillport into a thriving economic center. During his investigation, he uncovers a shocking revelation concerning the victims of Lord Orlin.
In We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies, Matthew Tysz skillfully portrays the positive aspects of magical powers among the characters, notably Marshus, Lord Eldus' son, who harnesses his abilities for the betterment of his hometown. The novel primarily follows the journeys of Galen and Lord Eldus, featuring a unique storyline complemented by a helpful map that aids in visualizing the world of Voulhire.
The author adeptly develops the world of Voulhire, taking readers on a captivating adventure. While the book does contain instances of violence, some of which may be unsettling, the second half of the narrative compensates with heightened excitement. I appreciate the clear differentiation of the numerous characters, each with their own distinct stories. The naming of chapters after specific characters facilitates easy tracking of the events. Knowing that this book is the first in a series brings a sense of reassurance, as it would have been disappointing if the story had ended after a single installment.
I found no faults or shortcomings in the book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the story and found Galen to be an intriguing character. The novel presents engaging characters and incidents that hold the reader's attention.
Based on all I’ve earlier stated, I rate We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz 5 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend it to readers who enjoy magic and original stories, particularly those who appreciate fantasy worlds with intricate world-building. The book's straightforward writing style and well-structured chapters contribute to its accessibility. Notably, the book has been professionally edited, as I did not come across any grammatical or spelling errors. However, I advise caution for younger readers due to brief scenes of violence, as well as for those who are not fans of fantasy literature.
