Imagine being immersed in a society governed by rigid programming. Your workplace is assigned a specific color, and you must follow a designated route to get there. At the office, your entire routine is predetermined: the same desk, one task, and a set phrase for communication until the end of the workday. Walking in an orderly manner is mandatory, and any deviation or interaction beyond the programmed limits is strictly prohibited. Even your thoughts are confined and restrained by programmed restrictions. Entertainment is predetermined, including the kind of dance to do. A machine determines your ideal life partner, while a pill suppresses your ability to dream. To combat boredom, you can choose to sleep throughout the weekend. And to top it all off, you are stripped of your name and reduced to a mere identification number. How would you cope in such a society? How did the people in this society survive? What makes P9-222 unique? What even made such a society exist in the first place? The answer to all these questions and more is in this captivating work by Shari Berman called Numbers.

What sets this book apart is its unique format as a scriptwriter's copy, tailor-made for seamless adaptation into a film. Despite its brevity, the narrative is engrossing, driven by exceptional suspense that compels readers to stay engaged until the very last page. The characters are skillfully developed, possessing captivating traits that evoke a range of emotions, be it empathy, sympathy, or genuine affection. The author skillfully employs flashbacks to enhance character development, a technique that I particularly appreciate.

My favorite aspect of the story occurs when P9-222 begins to regain her memories. The author authentically portrays the changes occurring within her brain due to the events that took place a month before her fifth birthday and during her adulthood. It was just like her mind was paused while they programmed her existence. Definitely, her memory was suppressed. I deeply sympathize with Joseph as he selflessly sacrifices for his sister. I am eager to discover the exciting events that await us in the next installment.

Numbers serves as an exposé of how society can manipulate the human mind, convincing individuals that abnormalities are normal and branding any dissenting voices as purveyors of hate speech or deviants. The people in this society have been reduced to mere automatons through systematic manipulation. I commend the bravery of Joshua, Elisha, and Joseph as they embark on their quest to locate P9-222 and fulfill her mother's wishes. Despite the conflicts arising from human differences, these disparities ultimately contribute to the beauty of our world. Readers will undoubtedly develop a newfound appreciation for the precious gift of freedom that we enjoy in our liberal society.

Throughout my reading experience, I encountered only two minor errors, a testament to the exceptional work carried out by the editors of this book. There is absolutely nothing negative to highlight in this exceptional piece of literature. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment spent with this book and eagerly await the next installment, if there will be any. As a result, I wholeheartedly award Numbers a perfect rating of 5 out of 5 stars.

I highly recommend Numbers to enthusiasts of plot-driven fantasy and science fiction novels. They will undoubtedly find it to be an immensely enjoyable read.
