If you’re like me and collect books having any and everything to do with fairies, faeries, Fae, and the like, then Shocking Finds (A Finder’s Keepers Novel) by Tracey Clark is another title to add to your shelf. Rather than venturing into some other realm of the fairies, the Fae come to the modern world in this paranormal romance.

Marin has always lived a sheltered life; her over-protective aunt, Lindal, has all but kept her under lock and key to guard her from the dangers of the world. But Marin has a special gift for Finding things – despite Lindal’s insistence that such “magic” is preposterous – which allows her the rare chance to work for the company Finder’s Keepers. While off on one of her assignments against her aunt’s wishes, Marin witnesses a car “accident” that leaves Lindal hospitalized, unconscious. Suddenly the over-protected twenty-year-old is left to fend for herself.

Meanwhile, Kyland, a Battle Fae on a mission for his Queen, has spent the last twenty years of his life in a multi-realm search of his own. He knows that Marin is the missing daughter of the Queen, and the electrifying powers that are emerging from her shielded psyche are proof enough that Marin has many more gifts than she ever knew. As her twenty-first birthday approaches, Marin comes closer to unleashing her power, which is potentially dangerous to everyone, both Fae and human. On top of that, Marin feels an inexplicable draw toward Kyland, evil Fae are out to kill her, and brownies have taken over her home. Marin would have been happy with a simple birthday, but it looks like she’s getting way more than she bargained for.

If you enjoy stories with lots of action right from the beginning and complicated, complex plots, then I would definitely recommend this book. Personally, I felt like there were too many things going on in this story; it was as if two or three different stories had been crammed into one book, yet none of the stories were fully fleshed out to completion. I especially felt like there was a lot missing about Marin’s gift for Finding things and her job at Finder’s Keepers. Seeing as this is the title of the series, I felt like it was important to know all about this job and Marin’s process for using her gifts. Actually, a few chapters into the book, I thought that I had unknowingly stepped into a sequel due to the way such significant details were passively mentioned. However, my search did not reveal any prior books in this series.

Despite all of the different plot points going on, the story progresses very slowly. The first 60% or so of the book feels like nothing more than Marin discovering details about herself and the Fae world, asking questions and receiving vague answers that lead to more questions, and wondering about the feelings she is developing for Kyland. Although so much time is devoted to asking and answering questions, I still left the book feeling like there were so many more questions that were unanswered.

Perhaps my unanswered questions will be answered in future books, but I still didn’t feel any sense of closure at the end of this story. I really enjoy the idea of this book but the current way that the book is organized just made it difficult for me to enjoy at its full potential. As it is, I give this book a rating of 2 out of 4 stars, though I would recommend this book to die-hard fans of the Fae world.

I, personally, love fairy stories. Too bad this one seems not as good as it should be.

"Die-hard fans of the Fae world" is a sentence I'm sure I've never said. Oddly, though, I've probably talked about particle accelerators quite a bit. I guess we all have our own peculiar argot.

I love fairy stories but I'm not a fan of slow moving books....I'll probably pass on this one

Faeries! I love faeries!
(And particle accelerators, but that's a separate topic :shifty: )

However, my to-read list is currently crushing me under it's weight, so I find I cannot add this to my list :(

Great read. As I am a fan of books about Fae and such, I might have to add this to my To Read list. It sounds like it could be a good book twinkie: fun, but not filling.

Hahaha... you should have been here a year or so ago when I used to put glasses on everyone's avatar pictures. Yours would have been cool way before it was cool.
