A Beauty’s Beast by Adam Scopp is a conglomerate of fairy tales brought together to create a new and more adult-like take on the traditional story line of Beauty and the Beast. Wren Belles seems to be the average girl, who is stuck in a world of fairy tale characters, with no idea who her parents are and how she fits into this world. She was abandoned by her parents and raised in an orphanage by Anastasia and Drisella, who you will recognize as the evil step sisters from Cinderella. The town they live in is overseen by The Queen, who just happens to be Snow White’s step-mother.

The Queen has recently placed a ban on entering the forest surrounding the town in order to protect the townspeople, who seem to disappear upon entering the woods. It is rumored that the woods are territory to the beast, who is the prime suspect as the cause of the disappearances. This book follows Wren as she defies the rules and enters the woods to meet her friend Gretel. She encounters the beast and discovers answers to the life she never knew she had come from.

This book had several things going for it. It not only took traditional fairy tales and gave them a twist, but made it appealing to a more adult audience. It is not filled with cutesy magic and happy endings. It has a darker flavor and a more gruesome view. What I liked the most was how the story strays from the traditional to the twisted. While maintaining the original character of the original fairy tale, the author brings out a more dreary and dark story.

While this book had a lot of great things, I felt that a few parts of the story to include vulgarity and profane language took away from the overall story. The drug references and odd curse words really undermined the overall feel for the characters and I felt that it did more harm than good, which I really disliked. The story also had several typos, which also took away from the effect of the story.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. While this book had a few minor misteps, the overall plot is intriguing. The darker spin on a fairy tale is a path that is not take very often, and in this case it works. The blending of fairy tale characters is done flawlessly, and I feel that adults will appreciate the less idealistic world that has been built for these characters.
