The Valkyries have a secret. The Gravitas; a pheromone invoking lust that Valkyrie females can produce and harvest for aphrodisiac products such as perfumes that can then be traded between planets. However, to help control the sexual Gravitas the females have multiple husbands. The stronger the Gravitas, the more husbands are needed.
Valkyrie on Planet Fury is the second book in the Gravitas Series by Lynne Murray and centres on the Valkyrie Val-Sybilla, also known as Sybil. A strong willed Valkyrie who is known for breaking tradition. Although she has strong Gravitas, Sybil refuses to take on more husbands as she has found her true love in Kyr-Josu.
Following on from the first book, Sybil has escaped the Forbidden Zone of Planet Earth with the help of the Sirens and is now on Planet Fury. Planet Fury is a harsh place where those with weakness are left to fend for themselves. It is run by the three Fury Godmothers; Alecto, Megaera and Tisiphone with their pet snakes. Just as the Valkyrie have the Gravitas, the Furies have their Wroth, which induces anger and vengeance rather than the lust and love of the Gravitas.
When on Planet Fury, Sybil discovers that those with extremely weak or no wroth within the Furies, who would normally be culled, may actually have the ability to communicate mentally. A great asset to a war nation. Sybil is given the challenge of training them up, as she has the ability to talk to her inner demons, a similar skill. But it will be Medusa judging her efforts.
I did have some issues with the story. The main plot of the book didn’t start until halfway through, which made the beginning of the book feel more like filler than actual story. However, once the main plot started I did enjoy it. This story has a very imaginative setting and plot which was a nice change when reading this style of book. I think what would have been nice would be to have the story told from another point of view as well as Sybil’s just to add another dimension. Maybe a male as they have a different standing and background to the females and therefore different opinions.
There was an issue in this book with typos. Some were just missing words in a sentence however, one was the name of Sybil’s husband. He was called both Marus and Marcus within the same paragraph and that carried on throughout the book.
Overall I would give this book 2 out of 4 stars. I did enjoy the story and it was written well but I feel it took a little too long to get started. I also think another point of view would have made the story feel a bit more rounded.
I would recommend this to those that like fantasy and mythology. There were some scenes of a sexual nature but it was written tastefully.
