Daniella Rae's A World Outside is set in a world of spiritual energies and evil queens. We follow the journey of an outcast, Lilia, trying to find a lost princess and maybe herself on the way. Lilia runs away from home only to find herself dragged into a new world with a prince calling her princess. After being tricked, she runs from all she knows so far leading her into a forest meeting a monster who must bring her to the queen. Now, Lilia must find the queen and a lost princess so she can find her way home. Joining with others looking for the princess; Lilia begins to know herself more and learn what real friends are. After several trials and tribulations Lilia must decide whether to follow her heart or follow her new found friends.
Some of Lilia's friends have their own side stories leading up to them meeting. Such as, Rae, who is carrying a terrible curse that threatens her whole family and her own life. Kole is a monster in many ways, from his physical abilities, his appearance, to his cold blooded nature. Then there is Marina who only sees Lilia as a spoiled crybaby with no real value. Little do we realize the connection they all share until the exciting conclusion.
What I liked about the book was that the author was able to make you feel as if you were in her whole new world. From the feel of the sun to the howl of a wolf that sends a chill through your heart. I believe that Daniella Rae developed most of her characters well. Making you understand what every one was thinking and doing while still keeping some a complete mystery.
I would rate this book a 2 out of 4 stars. The main reason I would give this 2 stars instead of 4 is that I felt that Lilia was a little too emotional. While it is good for her to have strong feelings, I felt that she became too easily attached to almost every man that she met throughout the book. This made her seem insincere in regards to an actual connection versus a shallow attraction. I would have liked to see her slightly more cautious with her feelings.
I will say that while this book is a good read I am not sure that it is re-readable. It feels like the plot line is structured strongly enough to give it the complexity required for a re-read. It did seem that Daniella Rae was attempting to give more depth to the story by adding in background stories for other characters, but was unable to reach it with this novel. This leads me to believe this book would be better suited as a young adult novel. Almost all of the characters are of that same age range and would make a better connection with the reader. Overall I would say that A World Outside is an adequate book that I would recommend to those younger than myself.
