We Are Voulhire was an excellent read.

This book is of a substantially higher quality than many others, in both quality of writing and plot. The author is magnificent at describing a scene in thorough detail. They manage to ensure it is not tedious to read the lengthy descriptions as the phrasing and vocabulary are elegant, which kept me engaged the entire time. The character interactions were wonderfully written as well, and it is clear an abundance of consideration was put into ensuring the dialogue sounded organic. I laughed out loud at a number of lines of dialogue due to the clever writing.

The plot essentially follows two different experiences happening in the fictional land of Voulhire. One is somewhat of a mystery as we follow various perspectives as they contemplate the impact one person had on a city of people and whether this person is truly gone. The other experience is through a man as he navigates a new land and provides hints about his past. There is no clear main character, and it would be more accurate to say that Voulhire itself is the main character, and we are given context of the land through various characters.

This book earns a 5/5 rating due to the exceptionally high quality the author delivered and how I was captured by the storytelling. The editing is immaculate as well.

That being said, there are some things to note. The story is undeniably a slow burn, and although I felt engrossed with the characters and plot, some people may prefer a more action-orientated story, which you would not find here. There is also no explicit sexual content or profanity. Another potential issue for some is that there is a large cast of characters, more so than any other book I’ve read. Every other chapter is a new perspective, and it can be disorientating if you are not prepared.

I never found issue with any of these things, however some people may prefer a different book that contains these elements.

Overall, it is a spectacular book and the author did a wonderful job at crafting a new world with fascinating characters.
