Jonathan Harper had betrayed his only friend in Leeds, Giles, by leaving him on his own at the hands of the O'keefes' gang. Things had escalated out of control; the bullying had led to arrests, and Jonathan's life had been threatened. Despite Giles being the one dealt the hard blow, Jonathan had fled to London with his father, courtesy of his father's company. Here they began a new life with new friends, and he even got himself a girlfriend until things spun out of control. He was now exposed to his father's work, and he didn't understand what it was about. Another gang had found its way into his life, and above all, a supernatural being was born into it. With these events, he is torn about whom to trust. He is struggling to understand the changes in his life, and just when he thinks that his life will be normal, another truth unfolds, and he is born a new person.

The Birth of Vengeance by P.A. Ross is book one in the Vampire Formula Series. For a debut in the series, the author did a fantastic job. The prologue in this book only has one sentence. As I navigated through the book and thought that I knew what would happen based on the prologue, I discovered how wrong I was. I was not confused by this, but rather it felt thrilling to go through the events and discover amazing plot twists.

The book began slowly, with Jonathan and Giles as normal high school kids being exposed to bullying until his father came into the picture. This slow beginning allowed for the exploration of the character's background and the flow of events, which proved useful as the story progressed. I came to realize why Jon had to move to London, why he had to meet the gangs, and how his thoughts and actions influenced the plot.

I was mesmerized by how P.A. Ross built his art of suspense and drama. The plot is far from predictable. All the events had a unique feel as if it were a first-time novel for me. The fear, nostalgia, and other feelings felt by the characters reverberate throughout the book. Being about vengeance, I resonated with the characters' thoughts and actions.

Jonathan Harper was a 15-year-old boy who had been forced to grow up at an early age by the betrayal of the people he thought he could trust. He's my favorite character in the book. I was irked by the decisions he made that I thought were stupid, like when he gave up on Scarlett. I later fell into the same frenzy he was in because it seemed that every character was not what I thought they were.

I rate The Birth of Vengeance by P.A. Ross 4 out of 5 stars. I've knocked off a star from the rating due to one dislike. The beginning of the book was not well developed. It felt more like a high school novel that revolved around teenage themes. This, however, is resolved later in the book. I suggest that the introduction be improved by introducing some of the scenes that are not solely based on teenage drama. Otherwise, I've given it a four because of the amazing progression of the plot, the professional editing of the book since I only found a few errors, and the careful exploration of Jonathan Harper's life.

Taking everything into consideration, P.A. Ross outperformed many sci-fi books I've read in a long time. He has an immense imagination, coupled with the best writing techniques. There are episodes where he left out information in a chapter because he knew the reader would realize this as they read along. An example is when Jon's father didn't ask about the lost needles when he knew Jon was the one who'd been in his office. Finding the answers and details to these random events filled me with joy. I'm happy to have already started on book 2 of this series. All who love books that revolve around lab experiments, supernatural beings, and vengeance will equally love this book.

The kid developing superpowers is a classic of superhero stories. In this case, it has a modern flavor with the inclusion of themes such as bullying and others updated to today's world. Thank you for your great review!

Even in the modern world, the concept of developing these powers was well explored and I'm certainly reading the sequel.
