Review of Covenvale High
"Covenvale High: Jennifer's Choice" by Amy Osbourne
Aimed at a young audience, specifically young teens, 'Covenvale High: Jennifer's Choice' by Amy Osbourne is a fast-paced story that follows the adventures of Jennifer the Werewolf during her first year of high school at Covenvale High. Written in a direct speech style, the novel delves into a world filled with typical magical creatures such as werewolves, vampires, and fae.
The story kicks off with a twist as Jennifer, who is set to marry Luke, another werewolf, encounters Jace, a mysterious vampire, on her very first day at Covenvale High. From that moment on, Jennifer's world is turned upside down as she finds herself entangled in a thrilling and magical journey to find her true destiny. Will she end up with Luke, as her family expects, or will she end up with Jace, the vampire?
The main character, Jennifer, is portrayed as a very naive girl, which adds innocence and vulnerability to her personality. This makes her journey all the more captivating as she battles with new emotions and experiences in the crazy world of magical beings along with the typical high school drama.
A notable aspect of the book is its simple writing style, which makes it easy for young readers to understand and follow the plot. The direct-speech format adds to the quick-paced nature of the narrative, keeping readers hooked throughout the story. However, while the fast pace and simplicity of the writing may be appealing to the target audience, it is evident that the book lacks the sophistication expected from more seasoned or adult readers. The lack of depth and complexity in the characters and the narrative may leave older readers yearning for more substance.
Another area of improvement lies in the editing of the book. Numerous errors are present throughout the text, which can be distracting and take away from the overall reading experience. It is sometimes difficult to decipher whether the grammatical errors are deliberate to highlight the character's youth or due to the author's lack of grammatical and syntax knowledge. A thorough editing process would have greatly improved the book's quality.
Despite its flaws, 'Covenvale High: Jennifer's Choice' is an interesting read for young teens, and I give it 3 out of 5 stars. Amy Osbourne weaves a tale filled with fantastical elements, making it a suitable choice for readers who love adventures in a world of werewolves, vampires, and fae. The novel's fast-paced nature and Jennifer's relatable naivety are sure to keep young readers captivated from start to finish.
