Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
“We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies” is a captivating fantasy novel by Matthew Tysz. Set in a mystical land, the book takes readers on a thrilling journey filled with magic, political intrigue, complex characters, and a well-crafted plot that sinks its hooks into you.
Saved from the war-torn land of the princes, Galen unexpectedly becomes the sole inheritor of his late uncle's estate and blacksmithing business Onita Steel. Having lived a life devoid of luxury and regular meals, Galen's world expands, unveiling a realm of endless opportunities.
After arriving in this new land, Galen meets Rowan, the executor of his uncle's estate, who worked very hard to ensure Galen was found. Rowan decides to go beyond his duties and remains by Galen's side to assist him in adjusting to his new life as the inheritor of the estate. Rowan was paid handsomely by Galen’s uncle, insisting that he was going to give him his money's worth by helping him settle into his new life and become prosperous.
King Wilhelm, the ruler of Voulhire, is a figure of great ambition and strategic acumen. The King's decisions carry significant weight and have far-reaching consequences that ripple throughout the land. His actions shape the fate of many, making him a central figure in the story. Whether it be alliances, wars, or the fate of individuals, his choices leave a lasting imprint on the lives of those under his rule.
Eldus Alderman, the head of the Alderman family is characterized by his authoritative presence and possesses a sharp intellect, and honesty. His unwavering dedication to the welfare of the people drives his actions, as he constantly strives to create a better world for them. His commitment to his duties as a leader is unwavering, and he always puts the needs of his people first.
On the other hand, Marshus Alderman, the son of Eldus, possesses a natural aptitude for magic, setting him apart from his father. Unlike Eldus, Marshus leans towards a different style of government, perhaps favoring a more magical and unconventional approach. This contrast in their abilities and preferences leads to differing opinions on various matters. Despite these differences, their bond as family remains strong, and they share a mutual desire for the betterment of Voulhire, even if they have contrasting views on how to achieve it.
The story is full of supporting characters that are well-crafted, deeply complex and multifaceted. From loyal friends to cunning adversaries, each character brings unique perspectives and adds depth to the story. Their interactions, relationships, and individual storylines contribute to the richness of the narrative, creating a sense of a fully realized world inhabited by compelling personalities.
The mystical land in which the story takes place is vividly imagined and beautifully rendered. The descriptive prowess brings the world to life, immersing readers in its vibrant landscapes, and magical elements. The attention to detail and the author's world-building skills creates a rich backdrop against which adventures unfold and each of the characters embark on their own remarkable journey. The intricate blend of politics and magic creates a peculiar and intriguing narrative. At times the political situations in the story bear resemblances to our own, prompting thoughtful reflection on the parallels between the fictional realm and reality. The combination invites contemplation, fostering a deeper understanding of our own reality.
I give this a 5 out of 5
There are a few instances in this book where unexpectedly mundane elements find their way into the narrative, disrupting the overall fantastical nature of the world. It's a realm brimming with unparalleled creativity, making it puzzling to encounter seemingly out-of-place references like football. Surely, with the vast imaginative scope of this book, there were ample opportunities to craft something truly unique or perhaps avoid such inclusion altogether.
Having said that, this is an enthralling and thought-provoking fantasy novel that offers a captivating journey into a world filled with magic, political intrigue and complex characters. The vivid descriptions and well-developed characters make for an engaging read. Despite occasional moments of necessary information overload, the book's strengths far outweigh its minor flaws. Fans of epic fantasy will find themselves eagerly turning the pages, hungry for more. The end of this book is just the beginning of a vast and beautiful universe that holds the promise of so much more.
