Bring Me to Life by Nicole Thorn is a Paranormal Romance novel about a girl called Anastasia who performs a spell with her friends, to gain magical powers, but dies in the process. She has to work off her sentence in Hell but is resurrected by her friends just as she's getting used to her new existence. Ezra, a demon working for Lucifer, is given the case of killing her again so her soul goes back to Hell where it belongs. When he gets the chance he hesitates and keeps her around for further questioning. They grow close while spending time in each others company, making it increasingly difficult for both to leave the other as the time draws closer when Ezra must kill her and send her soul back to the Devil.
I liked the teasing nature of Anastasia and Ezra's relationship because as the reader you want them to get together early on when they meet and are clearly attracted to one another but the whole process is drawn out with lots of steamy exchanges.
When I started reading the novel I found it quite difficult to get into the book because sentences were hard to swallow. The words didn't flow and I had to force myself to continue. Also I didn't care for all the TV references because it came across as a cheap way to make the story more interesting by piggy backing off the success of all those popular movies and TV shows referred to in the dialogue.
Eventually the novel became easier to read and the references stopped, at which point I found myself immersed in the story. The jokes got funnier about a third of the way in and I was thoroughly enjoying the romantic chemistry between Anastasia and Ezra.
I particularly liked Ezra's layered personality and back story because he was more than a pretty face. It gave a new dimension to the character and why he was that way.
I was quite disappointed with the Devil being so nice. On more than one occasion I thought there would be a twist in the story and he would turn out to be God but that wasn't the case.
I think the book should have been much shorter because it ran out of steam before the end. The romance and story as a whole was drawn out too much and stretched until the very end, I found this frustrating because they could have got together much sooner.
The copy I had of the novel had words missing throughout so I had to assume what was being said on many occasions, this grew annoying.
I also kept mixing up Ezra and Elisa while reading. It wasn't a good idea to have such similar looking names in the story, especially when one of them is the males protagonist.
I would rate the novel 3 out of 4 stars because I liked the Ezra character a lot as well as many of the romantic scenes. I would recommend it because the idea's involving Hell and demons (the Antichrists) residing there was quite interesting and although it was long I did enjoy reading it.
This book would appeal to Young adults because of its fantasy, romantic nature.
