We all know that there should be a balance between light and darkness. However, in recent years, the increase in violence, terrorism, wars, and hatred has given more power to darkness. Eader is a realm that shields the Earth from darkness. However, Eader is gradually becoming weak. In the battle between light and darkness, darkness is slowly gaining the upper hand. In such a time, Grey O'Shearan, a reclusive nerd living on Earth, quite unexpectedly finds himself in the magical realm of Eader.

Why does Grey find his way to Eader? What role does he play in the battle between light and darkness? Will he, a man who loathes company, be able to trust the people of Eader? Most importantly, will Grey be able to save Eader, and in the process, Earth?

Flames of Eader is the debut novel of Carina Steinbakk. I love how Steinbakk masterfully meshes magic and scientific facts to create a fantastical world. Every fantastical aspect of the book has a logical explanation. This actually made me believe that perhaps Eader truly exists. Also, I love the references to various books, films, video games, series, and superhero comics. The mentions of Harry Potter, Lex Luther, Batman, and Deadpool, among others, stoked my geeky side.

The characters of Flames of Eader are very relatable as well. I loved watching Grey grow up from a lonely reclusive boy and embrace his destiny as a hero. Also, his sarcastic comments really made me laugh out loud. I appreciate the detail with which his training and acclimation to Eader are presented to us. Darby Teine had a heartbreaking past. The immense responsibility on her shoulders made me root for her. I enjoyed watching Grey and Darby slowly grow close. I found Lay, the combat fairy with mind-reading powers, to be one of a kind. Callan is someone who kept me on my toes. Also, I have to say I was most surprised by Decipièr.

I did not find anything to dislike in Carina Steinbakk's Flames of Eader. I did find a handful of errors. These errors did not take away from my reading experience. I am sure a round of editing will fix those.

Overall, I rate Flames of Eader 5 out of 5 stars. This is because I found no reason to take away a star. It is a wonderful read that kept me riveted to the end. I am very eager to read the next book in the series.

I recommend Carina Steinbakk's Flames of Eader to fans of fantasy novels and superhero tales. This is the ideal book for people who love the genre of science fantasy.

This is an intriguing mix of science fiction and fantasy that uses some of the most classic tropes of those genres such as the (un)balance between darkness and light to create an engaging storyline. Thank you for your great review!
