Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
The Lands of the Princes, a nation governed by a wicked king, endured unimaginable suffering under his rule. Sensing a plot against him, the king sowed chaos among his own sons to thwart their plans for overthrow. Amidst this turmoil, Galen, who had known nothing but war in his life, discovered a glimmer of hope as he was named heir to his uncle's business in a distant country. Finally finding a reason to leave after years of torment, he wasted no time and escaped on a ship bound for the new land. What awaited him in this unfamiliar city?
This book, We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies, was a delight to read. I liked how this book started. It was intense, and it will definitely grab the attention of any reader, just as it grabbed mine. The well-crafted plot, brimming with magical elements, evoked sweet memories of the Merlin series. Each chapter's concise length and titled narrations added to the book's allure. The author, Mattew Tysz, skillfully painted vivid images, making the story come alive in my mind. Notably, his depiction of Galen's initial glimpse of the new city bore a striking resemblance to the book's cover.
The protagonist's character development impressed me as the story unfolded. Galen's transformation from a fragile young man to a courageous individual, ready to confront his deepest fears, was inspiring. The ship's captain, displaying unwavering kindness towards the protagonist despite not knowing his true identity, taught a valuable lesson of helping others, regardless of who they may be.
However, there were aspects of the book that I didn’t like. Chancellor Midius Maido's character proved to be an irritating and negative influence with his dark humor and offensive language. Additionally, the book introduced numerous underdeveloped characters, making it a challenge for me to enjoy this book. The names of some of the characters and places were confusing sometimes, as they almost looked alike.
These minor drawbacks did not affect my enjoyment of this book, as the author’s excellent writing and exceptional editing deserved every bit of praise it got. The lack of errors and enthralling plot make it an easy decision for me to grant this book a well-deserved 5 out of 5 stars. If you revel in the realms of magical fantasy and mystery, then this book is definitely for you.
