When the night falls, and everyone goes to sleep, the rats come out to play. Words on the street have it that the princess is still alive and that she is coming for us all.

This book, Forged By Pain by Bojan Bilos, is an outstanding tale of pain and vengeance. These lines tell the story of a young princess who loses everything in the blink of an eye. Without a chance or opportunity to process the downward spiral of the world she once knew, she is thrown into an unknown, unjust, and unthinkable fate. Princess Amelia, daughter of Imper Florian III and heir to the throne, watched as her family got unjustly overthrown and her parents were killed as a result of this. In the Imperium, there is an unsaid rule that when a family member commits a crime and dies without paying for it, the family member left alive pays for that crime in their stead. This becomes the fate of our beloved princess. She was tortured, only to receive treatment and repeat the procedure.

In this book, we follow the life of our princess, who, without anything to lose, embarks on the journey to pay back in kind everyone responsible for her family's misfortunes. While on this journey, she encounters many people; some turn friends, while others turn foes. Was she able to escape the claws of these unjust people? Did her revenge go as planned, or did she play right into the palms of these sick people? If you want to know how this story plays out, grab a copy of this book.

I want to commend the author for his awesome range of imagination. His ideas about torture tools, the process, and the emotions they confer on their victims were top-notch. He was able to describe how extreme pain affects the minds of people. The description of the war between Kadan and Gardland was excellent. The thought of the soldiers, while they risked their lives for their homes, was excellently portrayed. I always wondered if they never thought about the people back home when there was barely a 50% chance they would make it out alive. The book was an enjoyable read. I loved Ezra's character; how she connected to Rat further showed how important it is for a child to grow up with her parents. I have so much love for the characters in the book. They were well developed, each with their own story and drive. The book's length is also a plus, as it is not too long or too short. I also loved that the princess was never a damsel in distress. She was strong and resilient, irrespective of her past and traumas.

Some things could have been done better. First, there were a few errors found in the book, but it is nothing that another round of editing won't fix. I would say it was professionally edited at most. Second, there was so much repetition in the book. There were many instances where the author said ear-to-ear grins, and her voice was not what it used to be. It made the book a bit slow, as readers could easily picture what a sinister grin would look like. The fact that her voice had been damaged due to the torture was already established and didn't need to be emphasised any more. These are a few negatives I can point out without adding spoilers.

Overall, the book was excellent and delivered its points. I would rate this book a solid four out of five stars. Yes, there are negatives, but the book is generally enjoyable. There are a lot of profanities, so you might want to steer clear of this book if curse words bother you. This book best suits anyone who enjoys themes of death, suicide, violence, etc.
